The United Nations (UN) is facing its “worst cash crisis” in nearly a decade because almost one-third of its member states have not paid their annual dues, according to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Speaking in front of the UN’s budget-setting Fifth Committee on Tuesday, Guterres said the situation was so desperate that last month’s General Assembly in New York was only possible because of emergency spending cuts made earlier in the year.
“The organization is facing a severe financial crisis,” Guterres said.
...
Some of the other countries that have reportedly failed to pay their annual dues to the UN include, Brazil, Iran, Israel, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Uruguay.
The secretary-general said Tuesday that last week he had been “forced to introduce extraordinary measures to cope with the record-level shortage of cash.”
“Vacant posts cannot be filled, travel will be limited to essential travel only, meetings may have to be canceled or deferred.”So, who on this board cares about this, and if you do care...what should be done?

To start, I suppose, the US could pay both its 2019 dues and the past due amounts from prior years.

I can think of few things more foolish and dangerous than eliminating the United Nations or failing to adequately fund it. As bad as things are already, they can only get even worse without the UN or an equivalent organization where all the world's nations can get together and peacefully discuss their concerns and differences and try to find common ground. There is no excuse for this or any other nation to abandon it or fail to support it.

A third of the UN's shortfall is owed by one country. The country whose President has a long history of refusing to pay his debts. Imagine that.

I'm guessing the OP didn't actually read the details of the story and thought this would turn out some other way.

Trump also consistently refuses to pay the debts owed to the various municipalities where he has held his numerous rallies, to defray the costs of the venues, security, police protection, traffic management, etc., which is creating great financial hardships on them and even placing them on the verge of bankruptcy in some cases.

Subgenius, I thought Conservatives were against the UN. Was I wrong in that assumption?

They are and subbie is. This is just another of his threads pointing to a story that serves a conservative purpose and mocking progressives for being more focused on a Trump story he views as a 4D chess distraction.
