Sondland now remembers quid pro quo

From the Washington Post:
Gordon Sondland, ambassador to the European Union, acknowledged telling one of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s advisers that resumption of U.S. aid was tied to an anti-corruption pledge sought by Trump.
The acknowledgment in a deposition released Tuesday was a reversal from his earlier testimony. It puts Sondland in the middle of what national security officials saw as an attempt by the White House to leverage nearly $400 million in security assistance for investigations that could benefit President Trump politically.
The transcript of the deposition was one of two released by House investigators Tuesday as they continue to probe Trump’s efforts to press for an investigation into former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, who sat on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.
First, we had the whistle-blower. Couldn't see his face, so he couldn't be believed.
Next, we had the career diplomats. Couldn't believe them, because they were never-Trumpers, deep-Staters and Democrats.
Now we have the President's hand-picked man, telling us there was a quid pro quo.
Here's what Trump had to say on the subject in a tweet yesterday:
False stories are being reported that a few Republican Senators are saying that President Trump may have done a quid pro quo, but it doesn’t matter, there is nothing wrong with that, it is not an impeachable event. Perhaps so, but read the transcript, there is no quid pro quo!
Got that? It doesn't matter if the President proposed a quid pro quo, because it is not an impeachable event. Not that he did a quid pro quo, mind you, just read the transcript!
So, the goalposts move once again. Quid pro quo is not an impeachable offense. It will be interesting to see how Republicans respond to this. When you can't blame it on the deep state, never Trumpers or Democrats, what's left?

It's almost as though the standard fact finding technique of questioning witnesses confidentially first so it's not as easy to corroborate false testimony has value.

The other part of his attempt to unperjure himself is that he's testifying that Mike Pence was aware of the plan and was a key player in pressuring Ukraine. It's gonna be hard to argue that Trump has to go, but Pence can stay, which makes it even harder for Trump to go.

It's almost as stupid as claiming that it doesn't matter if someone admitted to attempted murder, because attempted murder is somehow not a crime. Not that he actually did attempt a murder, mind you (despite having just admitted it), just read the admission!
ETA: I doubt that very many of Trump's Republican apologists actually accept this nonsense. They just count on their base being stupid enough to accept it. It is a crying shame how many of them fail to realize how deeply insulting that is to them!

I saw dozens of Trump supporters at a rally wearing t-shirts that said "Read the Transcript."
Trust me; they're stupid enough to accept GOP nonsense.

I really need to get into the T-shirt business, so that I can make a fortune off of folks like these.

What I meant by apologists above was specifically prominent, Trump appointees and elected, Republican congress critters. I am convinced that a majority of them know full well what a fraud and scam artist Trump really is, and just don't care because they are either willing participants in the scam, or because they perceive their base supporters as being stupid and naïve enough to buy into Trump's bovine excrement without question, and have neither the inclination nor the courage to enlighten them for fear of risking whatever power and influence they perceive they have over them. Those base supporters who voted for Trump are the ones who are being deeply insulted by Republican leaders, whether they realize it or not.

I knew what you meant, and I agree. I've been saying for a while now that I find it amazing how stupid GOP pols believe their base to be, given how they treat them. But what's more alarming is how right they are. The GOP base is frighteningly stupid. It seems they will damned believe anything. No lie is too outrageous.
Just think about the current state of the GOP: in order for you to be in good standing, you have to believe Trump is telling the truth and everyone else is lying. Trump... the guy who lies even when telling the truth is to his advantage.
How damned gullible do you need to be to believe Trump over observed reality? As gullible as possible.

I sadly have to agree that a frighteningly high percentage of the GOP base really do seem to be as stupid and naïve as GOP pols believe them to be. If only they could be made to realize how deeply they are being insulted!

After yesterday's election results, I'm somewhat encouraged. Only the real hardcore idiots are sticking with the party.
