I suppose that's true. We are prone to imagine we reason things out to a true conclusion when we are very often using reason to back into something our passions have enflamed within us. But I don't think that's a conclusion so much as a warning for how one ought to put this reality to use.

It's best to recognize that ones feelings enslave reason, but that doesn't mean it makes the consequences ok if one is just acting on what they can't help but do in the moment. The reality seems to be we are building our tomorrow's today, making our future enslaved reasoning the result of passions we've fed today. So one should work hard on self-improvement focusing on a model of ideal behavior. Religion supplies that for people, but that doesn't come ready made for the non-believer. in my opinion, it's valuable to find a set of virtues that one can still pursue even as a non-believer. For me, it's primarily stoic philosophy mixed with a bit of Confucius' ideas about duty, a bit of this, a bit of that, and a healthy dose of optimistic skeptisim. But to each their own path I suppose.

When I was first coming to grips with Mormonism not being what I was raised to believe it to be, someone helpful on my way pointed out that underlying what made Mormonism and Christian belief appealing to me was it's embodiment of three cardinal virtues found in various forms of thought. Those being, the good, the beautiful, and the true. It's just my opinion, but I think as long as a person remains a believer in the good, beautiful, and true, ( especially in the face of a amoral, indifferent universe full of pain and suffering) and tries to do what one can to understand them better as well as foster their flourishing around ones self, it seems like the closest thing to the straight and narrow out there I can still believe in.

So well put, honor, and I do agree with it. Your expressions remind me of Article of Faith 13 and Philippians 4:8. You may see it differently, but I think they fit with what you're saying here. In any case, I agree.
