The tribal sovereignty decision is a big deal. The simple version is that Congress can't ignore that half of Oklahoma is native land because it is inconvenient for them to abide their agreements.

It's too bad it took so long for that case to get all the way to the Supreme Court, but I'm glad they decided against Trump. It's kind of a relief to find that Gorsuch is not as blindly sycophantic a supporter of Trump as I feared. This is not the only time he has sided against Trump in a Supreme Court decision. This is somewhat encouraging. I just hope that Biden wins in November and that Ruth Bader Ginsburg can hold on until Biden can nominate the next Supreme Court Justice. Having one Kavanaugh-like Justice in the Supreme Court is bad enough. If Trump gets a chance to nominate another like him, that would be disastrous!

The only redeeming quality about Kavanaugh is that he likes beer. The others probably go for Scotch and martinis.

Yeah, man. Huge relief. Sometimes I wonder if some of his decisions are made specifically to send that message.

Thomas and Alito dissented because they apparently think the President is a King, but as a practical matter, the opinion Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Roberts signed is narrowly politically beneficial to Republicans as it forestalls any chance of subpoenas winning court cases until after the 2020 election, but allows for what otherwise should be an uncontroversial outcome. It's easy to interpret this as a more sophisticated political act for Republicans, which has been Roberts MO for some time, and doesn't necessarily represent a total lack of politically driven decision making.

"...but the New York district attorney may not obtain Trump’s tax records until after the election."

this is kinda significant point ain't it?

And if Trump is reelected, the Southern District of New York will never be able to obtain it. Trump Enterprises will have a new cash cow by being able to keep cases out of court for undisclosed transaction fees.

The implications for this one are very large. It's the biggest legal victory for Native Americans in the lifetime of anyone posting here.

Yup! I wonder what ajax18 thinks about dispossessed people using the law to get back control over land that was promised to them in a treaty that their enemies then went ahead and broke "because we can".

I mean, is that OK in his thinking, or is violence the only acceptable way of settling such questions?
