The Comey Rule (clip)

Post by _Jersey Girl »

I didn't know where else to put this. It's a clip from an upcoming Showtime series titled "The Comey Rule" which is, of course, about Comey and the 2016 election. I don't expect to see the whole movie myself and I don't care if a discussion happens about it. The truth is I'm cheating because the only reason I'm posting this is because it's the first dramatic portrayal of Trump on film by an actor and the actor happens to be Brendan Gleeson who played Alastor Mad Eye Moody in Harry Potter. I don't think this is a fabulous portrayal (perhaps it grows on you during the course of the films) but I find it interesting that the first ever dramatic portrayal of Trump is being done by an Irish actor. I also think it interesting the explanation that "Trump" gives for why he follows the TV guys. I don't know if it's accurate or not, but given all we've seen and heard from him, I'd almost bet it's accurate.

Actor Jeff Daniels takes on the role of Comey. James Comey happened to visit the set the day they filmed this scene that this clip is taken from. He said he was brought to tears while watching it because it took him back to how he felt during that dinner.

There are trailers and teasers on youtube. Here's the clip.

I've only watched the HP series once, so I don't really remember Moody's character or performance. I just have to say that it's weird watching a serious actor trying to play Trump. Moody makes Trump seem a lot smarter than he actually is, so I'm actually not that impressed with the performance (at least in that dinner scene).

There's a dude on the internet that does a way better impersonation of Trump, although he's pretty funny, so he may not be able to pull off Trump in a dramatic movie. Here's a sample:

I wonder if it talks about the fact that Comey knew the dossier was fake long before he used it to get a FISA warrant. Tic Toc Jim Comey

Comey is not going to get indicted from his time as FBI director.
The Justice Department has decided against prosecuting former FBI Director James Comey for leaking classified information following a referral from the department’s inspector general, sources familiar with the deliberations told Fox News.

“Everyone at the DOJ involved in the decision said it wasn’t a close call,” one official said. “They all thought this could not be prosecuted.”

Inspector General Horowitz found that Comey violated FBI policy regarding the memos, but the Department of Justice declined to prosecute Comey.[22] In December 2019, Horowitz released a report finding no political bias against Trump by Comey or other FBI officials.[23]

No but he did know that the dossier was false when he used it to obtain a FISA warrant.

I think President Trump should expect loyalty from his cabinet. I'm not sure why that is such a controversial caricature. Sarah Sanders was right to point out that the best thing Trump did was to fire Comey. I don't understand why every single disloyal cabinet member wasn't fired immediately upon inauguration day.

Do you say this to yourself because it helps you avoid thinking about Trump's chronic criminality?

The whole reason Trump is freaking out these days and whining about an election that hasn't happened yet is because he knows the clock is ticking. I doubt Comey has to change his undies nearly as much as your orange douche hero does. Of course, given Trump's incontinence, it likely is only partially due to fear.

I see Comey as a tragic figure. I think he took his oath to defend the Constitution of the United States very seriously. He also understood that the appearance of fairness is just as important in maintaining credibility as fairness. I think what he failed to appreciate is the tension that can exist between the two in a highly politicized environment. In bending over backwards to appear fair to the right during the 2016 election, he did things that weren't fair. In doing so, he further tainted an election that was already tarred with the actions of the Russian government. He also got no credit from the right for his actions -- it launched an all out assault on Comey and the FBI as an institution. That started us down the path to where we are today -- a partisan Justice Department fully engaged in re-electing the President.
