To me, progressivism is merely the opposite of regression or stagnation, and is very much preferable to the latter. There are very few things in our society or the status quo than cannot be improved upon, thus it behooves all reasonable and honest people to frequently, if not continually, reevaluate ourselves and how we do things with an eye to improving both. It appears to me that, conservatism, especially hard right conservatism, too often entails slavish adherence to the status quo and a paranoid fear of anything new. innovative or truly challenging. It is also my observation that, historically speaking, economic oppression, bigotry, intolerance of minorities, and tyranny are far more often (though admittedly not exclusively) associated with those who bill themselves as conservatives than with those who claim to advocate progressivism or liberalism. Only liberals or progressives who are fake or hypocritical are guilty of or associated with any of those things, as far as I am concerned!

This is not to say that there are no traditions or current ways of doing things that are worth conserving, but neither is it true that nothing we have or do (however traditional or long established) needs to be improved or discarded.

Is 'progressivism' a well defined and widely used term in normal US political discourse? I presume it's not just about thinking that 'progress' is a good thing, since given the associations attached to that term, 'progress' nowadays means little more than 'change of which the speaker approves', thereby rendering it more or less vacuous.

It is not well defined. There was a more defined progressive movement in US history, but it’s not that. I think of it as people who considered them selves at the left end of “liberal” but not quite socialists. (Although some socialists may consider themselves progressive.) It generally includes folks who place importance on structural obstacles to equal opportunity. But, whether one is a progressive is pretty much a matter of self definition. It might coalesce into a more defined political group or even a party, or it might drift away on the breeze. Who knows?

It is increasingly apparent to me that hard right conservatives (especially Trumpists and QAnoners) have become determined to attempt to vilify virtually any political opponents (especially if they are even slightly to the left of their own position) as a progressive, or even worse, a Communist. They probably couldn't care less whether that characterization is really true or not, as long it succeeds in diminishing the number of votes for their opponents. It has become almost blazingly obvious to me that dishonesty and willingness to lie is or has become the most important defining or qualifying characteristic for many established or aspiring conservative Republican politicians.
