If you decide to see it, and haven’t read the books like me, do yourself a favor and watch some Dune lore videos on YouTube. It was like night and day for me having the background story explained. I watched the 1984 Lynch version a few times, but didn’t really make any sense to me so it was a bit of a struggle to get through it.

Also, the CGI was excellent. And the cinematography was *chef’s kiss*.

Good to know. I love the book and wasn’t wild about some of the changes that were made in the Lynch movie. (Weirding modules - give me a break.) I’m looking forward to the new version.

The movie was well dune. Hopefully they can carry the magic into part 2.

I say all this as a reader of the books. My partner who hasn't read anything from the Dune universe enjoyed it also.

I was dismayed by the critics of the original Dune movie until I realized they had not read the books. They handed out a flyer to moviegoers of the original movie identifying the major characters.

I read Dune way back when I was 14. I was on vacation in Hawaii with my parents when I read it. Most luxurious vacation I even went on. I'm pretty sure my grandparents (my maternal grandparents both had a PharmD) paid for it, my parents were public educators and never made much money.

I tried to like it, I really did. But I literally fell asleep 25 minutes into it. I also tried watching the 1984 version when I was a kid. I was 14 at the time, and never could figure out what the hell I was watching. And it takes a lot for me not to like Sci-Fi. Of course, I never read the books either.

It was beautiful, lyrical, hypnotic and a visual feast. It was also about 1/2 the story that needed to be told. I would have happily traded 5 minutes of lyricism for some greater character development, especially between Paul and his mother and father. The movie ends with Paul's political relationship with the Sietches very much in flux, yet you are given the impression that all is resolved.

And I'm not particularly happy about having to wait until 2023 for intermission to end.

An excellent question. I suppose that is what I get for posting past midnight, errors galore. She of course has read a great many things... Dune however, is not among them.

I liked it. Visuals were incredible; music was okay; every scene is so huge it's another crescendo ten seconds after the last one. Proof that Lynch's Dune is Dune, for better or worse: a walkthrough of the same plot points from the book with really somber characters and cold, mysterious landscapes.

Not sure there is much more that can be done with a book with so many moving parts, and then the first book is just the set-up for the rest, and it's a political drama so very slow moving.

The interpersonal conflicts feel random; no buildup to get you invested in the fights.

Even though Duncan Idaho was the only attempt at a personality, it was too much to believe he was so respected by his enemies, and that he'd single-handedly take out so many Sardaukar.

I can appreciate the hints that Paul is ready to use the Fremen to solve his own problems or fulfill ambitions, but I think I like Lynch's version better, going all-in on Paul as a Messiah, and make it over-the-top. I think that's closer to Herbert's intention to say that all Messiah's are false Messiahs, and I like a Paul that lacks self-awareness. As Ajax believes US troops are ready to fight for Trump personally, the Fremen will be ready to fight for Paul, and lets face it, the Fremen are basically unhinged right-wingers.
