If this happens, the political backlash will be fierce. This is the one thing I could see upending GOP chances of taking control of anything in the midterms. People will go nuts.

I hope so but I remain skeptical. One because I'm not entirely certain Democrats well successfully leverage this as the rallying cry they should. Two because the general public is woefully unaware of what their own states laws would look like if Roe v Wade was overturned. Perhaps seeing those trigger laws kick in will have an impact on people, but who knows.

Unfortunately abortion also ranks fairly low on most people's political radar, despite the hype it seems to have each election cycle. Honestly I think the latest laws in Texas is the most "fired up" I've actually seen regular people about it and the Mississippi law got significantly less media attention than it.

Perhaps you're right. I suppose the reason I think this will backfire on the GOP is that only 24% for the nation wants Roe overturned, according to an article I just read. Also, elections are decided on the margins. It only needs to swing a small percentage of voters to wipe out GOP hopefuls in the midterms.

Oh please!! Overturning Roe versus Wade and allowing States to make the decision if abortion remains legal or not is a great idea. I'm so excited for the Republicans I might just vote three times next election.

Obviously I hope you're correct and if there is going to be a catalyst to reinvigorate Dem voters this is likely as good an option as any. The headwind is just very strong in the upcoming year and I'm not sure this will be enough unless it is leveraged really well.

Also you're 24% figure is roughly what I understand the sentiment to be (maybe even a touch low) but I also know that peoples views are much more complicated then simple yes/no kind of things. There is also a ton of evidence to suggest that the average American doesn't understand what Roe actually covers. Like when asked about specific trimesters most of the polling I've seen has only about 30% support for second trimester protections, which obviously falls within standard Roe protections.

Yes please, so it hurts the Republicans politically.

It's incredible to me how much overlap there is between the anti-abortion and pro gun electorates. You cannot claim to be pro-life while people are regularly killed in mass shootings and you're against doing anything real about it.

All I can conclude is that these people do not damned think. Of course, a lot of them also voted for Trump, so obviously they don't think. A cockroach has more sense.

One of the things that drives me crazy with regard to Conservatives and abortion is they don’t really devote much thought to the reality of forced birthing. You hear a lot of moralizing about killing babies or whatever, but where’s their concern for a system that ends up being created to take care of unwanted and maltreated children? Here’s a Social Worker’s experience with child services:
Foster care permanency social worker. Bachelors in Philosophy and Political Science, Master's of Social Work, 7 years in my field.

$41,237 a year, something like $20.15/hr. Roughly 50-60 hour weeks. No paid overtime past 40 hours. Consistently on call despite no formally assigned "on call shifts." Weekend work because child abusers don't take weekends off so neither can I. No bonuses. No reviews. No raises. My state's median income for people with my education and experience is 55k. In a pro-union state and it's one of the only fields that can't unionize.

35 family caseload with each family having 1-5 children. I transport all of my kids and make my monthly welfare visits (each child needs between 1-3 in person visits a month, depending on level of need/severity of case) in my personal vehicle, which is required. I drive on average about 300-500 miles a month not including my hour commute to work and home. I get mileage reimbursement of only 56 cents a mile and it's always 5-6 weeks behind so never paid out on time.

I've been a human shield more times than I can count. I've been punched, hit, stabbed, threatened, pushed down stairs, pelted with glass and bricks that broke my skull, and shot at while in the field, and it's not rare. I covered a child's eyes with my tits while I watched their father shoot their mother to death. I'm currently working with the FBI and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to find a sex trafficked infant. I've gone into a literal burning house and removed a child. I had a gun pulled on me 4 feet from my face with a 6 year old in my arms. I saw a 14 year old girl shot in the face by her pimp. And not once have I ever been given a bulletproof vest even when going into these situations WITH police escorts. I'm not even legally allowed to carry mace. I've had my tires slashed by angry parents. The week before Thanksgiving my car was surrounded by honest to God Bloods while entering a home to serve a child protection warrant. While the county sheriff watched from the street and did nothing.

I'm in the middle of my 6th adoption process. SIX in SEVEN YEARS IN THIS FIELD AND HUNDREDS OF KIDS. I go to court at least 5 times a month to testify against people who have threatened to kill me, criminals, loving parents who want another chance, and advocate for my kids' best interest. That adoption? 4 years in the making. Currently in the middle of a (yes, literally) 831 page packet of adoption paperwork. That I have to put together myself.

I love my kids and I'm grateful to share my life with them every day. All 71 of them. But I'm tired. And so, so broke. But mostly tired.
One person for 35 families and 71 kids? For $20/hr? Please explain how children in this system, not the outliers who make something of themselves, grow into adults who can interface with the world in a healthy space? If you think things are dicey now with regard to social instability, wait until we add thirty or forty million people to the mix who were forced into a terrible world. It’s not going to be pretty.

This could actually be happening.
About time. This is going to be great news for so many Americans. We need to protect the unborn.
