These mass killings tend to make me think that the postulate of; at a certain point of development, civilizations often self annihilate. Someone with a brain so cross-wired that they will take out children as a final act on their way out is, to me, less about enragement, but more just... bleakness for humanity.

I guess all it takes is one guy like that in a position of power and a button finger. I'm still carrying some trauma from Taylor hitting the button in 'Beneath the planet of the apes.'

I think it is when an alien god or pantheon picks up errant signals and tries to muscle in on the territory and resources of our creation. Perhaps a squadron of Moroni, Nephi, Joseph, and the three Lamanites could be launched in time to intercept their so-called "invasion".
