Idaho hospital terminating labor and delivery services

Idaho hospital terminating labor and delivery services due to political climate
"Highly respected, talented physicians are leaving," Bonner General Health in Sandpoint, Idaho, said in a release. "Recruiting replacements will be extraordinarily difficult."

Women who would use the 25-bed hospital for labor and delivery services will have to seek care at facilities in Spokane, Washington, or Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, according to a report.

Bonner General Health delivered 265 babies and treated fewer than 10 pediatric patients last year, the hospital said.

Many challenges have hampered rural facilities struggling to keep their doors open, including the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Across the nation, hospitals in states with more stringent laws surrounding abortion have seen an increased risk of dropping doctors and staff to areas with fewer restrictions on the practice.

Idaho has heavy abortion restrictions, causing many healthcare professionals in the state to be placed in an ethical bind.

"The Idaho Legislature continues to introduce and pass bills that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care," the Bonner General Health statement said. "Consequences for Idaho Physicians providing the standard of care may include civil litigation and criminal prosecution, leading to jail time or fines."

Along with a troubling political climate, Bonner General Health reported that shortages in its staff and a demographic shift led to "the emotional and difficult decision" to terminate its labor and delivery services.

"We have made every effort to avoid eliminating these services," according to Bonner General Health Board President Ford Elsaesser. "We hoped to be the exception, but our challenges are impossible to overcome now."
Does anyone still think that the imagined benefits of these draconian, scientifically and medically ignorant anti-abortion laws come even close to outweighing the dangers and harm posed by them to the health and safety of all of us (especially women)? The scientifically illiterate and religiously bigoted politicians responsible for this idiocy, that is so much at odds with what the vast majority of Americans want, should never have been elected to public office, and deserve to be voted out of office as soon as possible! I hope, for their own sake, that the majority of Idahoan voters will sooner, rather than later, come to realize that!

It is still anecdotal, but I have read in many places online women, even in relationships, are feeling more worried about getting pregnant. Even when they want kids, they want to delay if possible for a better climate. Ectopic pregnancies are non-viable and will kill the mother, but it is considered an abortion. Stats are given usually with a disclaimer of how unreliable they can be, but it could be as high as 1 in 50 in the US, but usually the lower bound is still 1 in 100. That’s just one possible complication of pregnancy that could require what is considered an abortion.

Given the undisputed fact that ectopic pregnancies are never viable and cannot be made viable and will almost certainly kill the mother if not terminated, are there really any states whose laws actually forbid abortions even in the case of ectopic pregnancies?

In addition to that, it is my understanding that in some states now (Alabama, for example) merely having a spontaneous miscarriage, which occurs naturally in as many as a quarter or a third of all pregnancies (often even before the woman knows she was pregnant) can place her in legal jeopardy of prosecution and even prison time. This is both insanely unreasonable and unjust!

Miscarriages are already criminalized. Pregnancy rights advocates fear it could get worse | Roe v. W

Murder charge for a miscarriage?

Gravitas: Woman charged with manslaughter after suffering miscarriage

Conservative Nutcases Are Running Doctors Out Of Town
Idaho conservatives are in effect trying to threaten and criminalize doctors who are only dedicated to providing the best accepted standards of healthcare for women, thus putting their health and sometimes their very lives at risk -- especially if they are of childbearing age. As one of the commentators to the video put it:
According to the Bible women must not hold any power over nor educate men but must always serve as house managers and baby makers only. This is stated not just in the Old Testament but reinforced by the New Testament as well.
The subjugation of women is not unique to Islam but is shared by evangelical Christianity and orthodox Judaism as well.
And before any Hindus chime in about their dogma supposedly being more tolerant please take a look at the data on how women are currently treated in Hindu-dominated countries.
Religion is about control justified only by an unverifiable, unquestionable and unchecked authority. The real authority are flesh and blood men who want to exclude half of the world's population from having any say right from the get-go.
It is almost funny how evangelical Christians are the ones always naming their organizations using the words 'freedom' and 'liberty' when the only freedom they want is the freedom to oppress those who are not like them.

I've come to the solid opinion that you can't be religious and pro-life at the same time. The best you can be as a religious person is pro-birth, which just makes you a damned moron on the topic of human reproduction.

I was talking to a dude last week who has a masters in engineering. Not dumb. Somehow the topic of abortion came up, and this guy had the audacity to claim he'd "studied the topic, and life begins the moment the sperm hits the egg."

So yeah, you can be a smart guy and damned retarded at the same time.

I told him, by that standard, your sperm is alive. Hell, your mucus is alive. He said, "Not really," which is exactly what I think of a zygote.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense.

The god idea is popular with desperate people.
