The Gravest Threats to Campus Speech Come From States, Not Students

Post by Alphus and Omegus »

Great essay here with the proper perspective that whiny students yelling at speakers is nowhere near as dangerous to free speech as governors and legislators trying to censor classroom instruction and ban books:

The far-right is desperate to get people to obsess about local news controversies even as it pushes laws to ban books read by adults and censor college professors, all in the service of absurd beliefs about homosexuality, race, or science.

I think most people would agree that dopey Republicans like Ben Shapiro should be able to hold speeches on campus. Most Republicans would not agree that professors should determine their lecture material and that librarians are capable of performing the job they were hired to do, without meddling from authoritarian politicians.
