Meanwhile, on planet earth...

The climate is becoming more bizarre and more threatening.

It's winter in the Chilean Andes. But high temperatures have recently exceeded 100F.https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/ ... ina-chile/

Arizonans suffered second and third degree burns from road surfaces during a record stretch of days where the temperature exceeded 110F.https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/24/health/a ... index.html

Coral reefs in Florida are dead or dying. Scientists are trying to preserve coral species by moving them to tanks. https://www.npr.org/2023/07/28/11908244 ... -from-heat

The Fertile Crescent is becoming a desert. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/29/worl ... ation.html

Lakes are drying out at unexpectedly high rates. https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/ ... te-change/

July 2023 was the first month where the global average temperature exceeded that of pre-industrial times by 1.5C -- the limit the Paris accords tried to set. https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate- ... threshold/

Collapse of the AMOC, of which the Gulf Stream is a part, was once thought extremely unlikely. A new analysis predicts it will happen between 2025 and 2095, with a central estimate of 2050. https://www.theguardian.com/environment ... y-suggests

House Republicans are determined to repeal the portions of the Inflation Reduction Act that address climate change. They've loaded up the must-pass appropriate bills (including the defense bill and the farm bill) with poison pill amendments to prevent the federal government from not only taking action to facilitate movement away from dependence on fossil fuels, they're doubling and tripling down on drill baby drill. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/1107 ... -spending/

And the Heritage Foundation has published Project 2020, a conservative roadmap to dismantle U.S. climate change policy and boost fossil fuel production. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/1107 ... -spending/

I guess we're doing the full Thelma and Louise.

It’s crazy, Res Ipsa. It’s August and a couple wasps are just showing up. Heart breaking that there are no bees. I’m dumbfounded. I really am.

I have some family vacationing in in Alaska right now. Yesterday, they texted pictures from a Matanuska Glacier. Everyone had T-shirts and shorts on. Temperature was in the mid-70's.

Kind of surreal juxtaposition of the outfits and the landscape.

I wonder how much of a night time they're getting up there right now.

I think where they're at, it's about 7 hours right now. If they had gone a month ago, they would have been rocking under 5 hours of night-time.

We had our second hottest summer ever last year and we are well on pace to beat both of those records this year. Summers here were always warm but the sheer number of 100+ degree days has shot up tremendously over the last few years and the heat during certain periods has become very fatal. We've seen a lot more talk about "wet bulb temperatures" here to help indicate when it truly is not safe to be outdoors for extended periods of time and we've been crossing those thresholds a ton here lately.

In a bit of schadenfreude, I've had to chuckle (mostly to keep from crying) a bit at the folks around here that were very anti-climate science even as recently as last year who are now coming to the realization that we may be early on the list of climate refugees.

Yeah but,... can you really trust all those scientists? They do not appear to be Trump supporters and some have Jewish-sounding last names just like Dr. Fauci.

I notice that each year sets a new record. Unfortunately, that will probably be ongoing since the tipping point has been reached.
