White supremacy is alive and well in Newbern Alabama, and apparently as deeply entrenched as ever. Patrick Braxton, who legitimately won election to mayor of the town is the first Black man to ever win election to that office there. The all White city council locked him out of the town hall, and refused to allow him access to the town's finances and bank accounts. The town's post office refused to deliver the official town mail to him.

In addition the town has had a history of refusing to respond to life-saving emergencies affecting Black citizens. For example: as member of the city's volunteer fire department, he was the only one who responded when a Black citizen's house was threatened by a nearby tree fire. His fellow volunteer fire fighters even tried to take away the keys to his fire truck to prevent him from using it. In another case, Braxton heard the call of a black woman having a heart attack. He tried to get to the box containing the fire department's emergency defibrillator, but the locks had been changed, preventing him from accessing it. He rushed to his home to get his own personal defibrillator, and rushed to her aid, but the delay prevented him from getting there in time to save her life.

As Ken Harbaugh remarked, to someone used to enjoying unfair privilege, equality seems like oppression.
