Do-it-yourself merry-go-round

Post by dantana »

I was wanting to get a merry-go-round for the G-kids but the prices to buy them are crazy. I had an old trailer axle, cut it in half, stuck it in the ground and voila. And, since I had two axle halves, why not build two. The kids haven't seen this one yet. The center post doesn't turn with the platform so the kids can spin themselves.

Items you'll need;
Half a utility trailer axle.
Main deck - 3/4 CDX, 2 ply.
Seat - 3/4 CDX, 1 ply.
Upright members - 2x6 KD hem/fir.
Top rail - 1" pex pipe.
Center post - 3/4 x 24" galv. pipe connected to spindle with coupler with 1-1/2 pvc cover
Top wheel - Frisbee over CDX.
Accent trim -1/16 x 3/4 alum over plywood edge.

Thank you Dean R. Thank you High Spy.

High Spy, you are certainly an interesting fellow.

Speaking of numbers, I need to call you next time I have to calculate 7 equal spaces around the circumference of a merry-go-round, having just the solid number of diameter to go off. I went with the - guess, measure, readjust method.

The number 57 isn't an anomaly.

I saw the pic before reading and was blown away by the clean bend of the top rail. Then I saw the parts list and thought it was a clever solution. Nice work!

Thanks Honor!

Yeah, that pex comes in a roll, so one doesn't have to do much to get a good arc. I did shove some short chunks of dowel down the tubing to be under the connection points. It seems to be plenty sturdy enough.

Holy cow, that looks professionally done.

For the information of all. It is professionally done. 8-)

Last week my Hood photo appeared on my iPad, by random chance, so I quickly moved it to my avtr album, because it’s still a mystery to me, how to rename and search for any specific photo.

SeveraL LittLe cabin sheds were located across from our drafty long house that my house hunting party was staying at. Anyway my wife weighed 4 pounds, 11 ounces when she was born on April 11th. 4/11 was also my first wedding day.

After our posts, the average of our post counts was 412, and 4:12 was when my dad got off work from Sperry Univac, where he helped build the first computer to land on the moon. His middle name was Francis too.

The 411 house was the coolest, just sayin’
