Pay to reject cookies? Is this really what is next?

Post by IWMP »

I wanted to read a crappy tabloid article that was advertised and this popped up...

For real.. I refused to read it on principle. This will be all over soon. What right do these people have to pull this crap? I have to pay to keep my rights?

I do it all the time with the Girl Scouts. I bribe them with ten dollars, say thank you, then politely ask them peddle their nasty-ass cookies somewhere else.

I had some Girl Scout cookies once, and I thought the cookies were really nice.

Fortunately for them, most folks agree with you.

The Girl Scouts is certainly a laudable organization worthy of support. However, like a pirate navigating Facebook, I block their cookies when I can.

I can't imagine anyone paying for something so trivial, LOL. If someone is bothered by cookies enough to pay, they're probably savvy enough to block them for free.

??? Girl Scout cookies are the best, man. I'd love some of their thin mints right about now.

UK Information Commissioner's Office and European Data Protection Board both say pay to reject cookies is not being compliant. You can have a paywall site, but you aren't in compliance with the law if it is accept cookies/tracking or pay. Though the opinion is more advisory that it isn't compliant, and apparently further clarification or precedent is needed to really make it something to put the fear of god into these companies.

Somebody will just build an effective web proxy ad filter and it will become moot.
