The richest man in the world showed his compassion to victims of Hurricane Helene by offering them free Starlink. Trump chimed in saying that the victims needed "large doses" of Starlink, while also admitting that he didn't know what it is.

Starlink is Musk's satellite internet service. You have to buy hardware that costs around $400 and pay a minimum of $120 per month to get the cheapest level of service.

So, what did the free Starlink offer mean?

Well, the offer was for 30 days of free introductory service for 30 days, after which the service would continue at regular price. Oh, and you already had to have the satellite dish or buy one from Musk at a $100 discount. Oh, and the delivery time for the hardware, according to Starlink, is 2-3 weeks. That is, if your roads aren't washed out. And then you can use it, if you have power.

But wait, there's more. Starlink already has an offer for first time residential subscribers: it's 30 days free service, and you can return the hardware free if you don't want to keep the service. The free service doesn't include return of that $300 hardware.

So, what Elon did is offer hurricane victims something that was worse than what the existing offer for new customers.
