Ja, jeg ble født i Stavanger. Familien min immigrerte til Amerika i 1949 da jeg var 5 år gammel, og jeg kan norsk og dansk, men jeg er litt rusten nå i begge. Jeg får ikke mye praksis i å snakke. Jeg bodde i Danmark i omtrent 2 1/2 år, på begynnelsen av 60-tallet, og jeg snakker faktisk dansk bedre enn norsk.
God kveld til deg også! Men klokken er bare 5:19 her i California, hvor jeg nå bor.

Back to English. I’m American, but I served a Norwegian mission in 2004. Norsk is a fun language, but I don’t get the chance to practice very often.
Edit: I served a Netherlands mission, sorry. I had a (the only) great Norwegian companion, and thinking the gift of tongues would allow me to become fluent in multiple languages, practiced a bit of Norwegian with him.

I served a mission in Denmark because I could have been inducted into the
Norwegian armed forces for a mandatory 12 months service, had they sent me to Norway instead, because by Norwegian law I'm still a Norwegian citizen by birth. There was at least one other Norwegian American also there when I was, for the same reason. There have actually been cases of that happening to Mormon missionaries of Norwegian birth sent to Norway.
Norway is part of NATO, and has a pretty big budget for the military. But despite this, military conscription in Norway is very different from what people in other countries are used to. So let’s take a close look at what the military conscription is like in Norway, who gets drafted to serve in the military, and other special things about it.
Norway has a mandatory military conscription where all 19 year old men and women are required to meet at a military base for a muster. Around 15 % of all of these are drafted to join the military for 12 to 19 months for unpaid military service.
There are roughly 60,000 new potential recruits every year, and about 8,000 to 10,000 of these get drafted. So around 15 % of all available 19 year old men and women are called in to actually serve. Some of these get sent home again after being considered unfit to serve, and on average over 7,500 people actually end up serving on a yearly basis.
Back before 2000, pretty much all 19 year old men without any health issues were forced to join the military for 12 months of service. Since then, fewer and fewer people have been drafted due to budget costs.
The thing is that Norway simply don’t have the equipment to handle any more recruits as of right now, and accepting 10,000 new recruits each year is already pushing their limits.

Oh no, that’s embarrassing. I feel very old now. My mission was in Netherlands (Dutch speaking), but the only companion I really liked, and still talk to to this day was from Norway and I had fun learning a bit of Norwegian as well. As a missionary, I thought I was invincible and the gift of tongues was real. Sorry about that.

LDS Missions sometimes involve a temporospatial rift due to the decompensation of the Smithian Story Zone. Sometimes the Lehi Voyage of Discovery zigs right and lands in Narnia; other times it zigs left and heads to the Delmarva Peninsula.
