Not Prisoners of Mother England
Congratulations America, you have not had a king for about 250 years. Keep up the good work.

You're just mad because somebody aside from the president or Fox news is exercising their right to free speech.

Re: Not Prisoners of Mother England
I presume that this is about the very large-scale "No Kings" protests that will soon be erupting in many US cities?
The US constitution was built with strong separation of powers, together with checks and balances, that were designed to ensure that a powerful and ruthless man would find it difficult to rule like the kind of untrammelled monarch that persisted in a number of European countries in the 17th/18th centuries.
The problem for Americans today is that they now have a combination of a Supreme Court packed with Trump loyalists and a Republican-dominated Congress who are too scared of losing their jobs to offer any resistance. Astonishingly, it is now quite possible for Trump to become the kind of ruler that the whole Constitution thing was designed to make impossible. And that is very clearly what he wants, and what he is doing his best to achieve by all possible means without exception.
If Americans don't get out there and protest, a king (in effect) is what they are very likely to get. The Founding Fathers must be turning in their graves.

Despite the lessons of history and the evidence now before them, some Republicans seem to think such a thing impossible and cling to incredulity as if it were a means to salvation. Some other Republicans actually embrace concentration of power in the executive branch, seemingly forgetting the probability that this concentrated power will one day transfer to a Democrat.Chap wrote: ↑Sat Oct 18, 2025 5:10 pmThe US constitution was built with strong separation of powers, together with checks and balances, that were designed to ensure that a powerful and ruthless man would find it difficult to rule like the kind of untrammelled monarch that persisted in a number of European countries in the 17th/18th centuries.

Nah. You and Gad could explain yourselves if you could but you can’t so you don’t.

That may not matter if the Supreme Court decides to gut the Voting Rights Act.Bret Ripley wrote: ↑Sat Oct 18, 2025 5:41 pmSome other Republicans actually embrace concentration of power in the executive branch, seemingly forgetting the probability that this concentrated power will one day transfer to a Democrat.
Republicans are counting on that happening, which will allow them to maintain a majority in the House for a generation.

Re: Not Prisoners of Mother England
Just got back from the local No Kings protest. That was one of the best experiences I've had in a while. It's lovely to see all the local people who aren't drowning in Kool-Aid. There are plenty of educated people still among us that actually understand the founding of this country. The signs and costumes were fantastic.
And I actually found it pretty funny when a MAGAte would drive by giving us all the finger. It's nice to know who the local idiots are. A common theme was pointing out how angry MAGAtes were as they drove by. We protesters were all smiling. One lady was in the habit of yelling loudly at them, "Have a nice day!" with the same tone as someone yelling, "Get off my lawn!" Made us laugh every time.
All in all, an excellent experience.
