Actually, Res, how are you doing up there?

I’ve got a small roof leak, which means I’m better off than many folks. One of my kids was packed up ready to evacuate last week, but the river cooperated. Not sure about the next few days. My brother lives in Leavenworth, away from the river. The main east-west highway was taken out in Tumwater Canyon, but they won’t be isolated unless the river takes out the highway downriver of the town. All in all, we’ve been pretty lucky.

My wife and I spent a couple nights in Leavenworth once. What a great place! We had some authentic bratwurst at one place and they were divine.

I notice a meteorological puzzle which I am sure experts understand. I live in southeastern Washington where modest rain fell and streams are not at all contemplating floods. For this atmospheric river the Cascades sucked up the water. There have been times in years past when such a river dumped enough water out east of the Cascades to create serious flooding. Those events involved both lots of warm rain and a snow pack to melt. I am left wondering why the rain difference.

The why question does come up because the current event makes me consider the past flood events. There was painful destruction, floods are seriously difficult. I can consider my home and the creek and at what point is there danger. The town has serious flood control structures, ones I once thought invulnerable. The last flood a few years back made me wonder as it approached overriding the defenses.
