Tinsel is a German thing. They'll even stop a war for a few hours to hang their tinsel, sing some songs, rest, drink, and then get back to business. On the eve of December 25, 1776, General Washington wasn't guided by the stars—since it was raining—but by the glimmer of tinsel in the hands of the Hessians on the far shore. And don't get me started on the Nazis and their tinsel...

I think that supports my feelings about tinsel. Even though my mother (RIP mommy) was a German import.
Tinsel is evil, and everyone knows it. Regardless of the reason.
Tinsel is not the reason for the season.
Frank Costanza was right.

A pretty good band for the season:

According to Wikipedia, tinsel was invented in Nuremberg in 1610, so I guess it is German in origin. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it here in Germany in the past 20 years, though.

Maybe it’s actually common and it just hasn’t registered, but my impression is that it’s much more typical in North America.

I've heard about that Christmas at Temple Square—where the LDS Church puts on its impressive display featuring those beautiful bright holiday lights—it's pretty cool. In addition, it adds their shiny, happy missionaries, and then it's back to business as they ring in the new year
