I beginning to think that gods and religions are tools to compartmentalize a person's innate insanity.

Everyone who keeps a god in their head can assign any of their own personal craziness to their god creation because it works. People say the most outrageous crap in the name of the god they created. They speak with conviction about it as though their mental creation has actual governance over other people, like their particular ideas have a tangible effect on others, not realizing other people have their own gods, and everyone's god concept is ready to do battle with anyone else's god concept.

All the god idea really is is a place to store your insanity. For example, when someone says something like the gay lifestyle (as though being gay invokes a rigid lifestyle), I think you can assume they don't like gay people for whatever repressed reasons and have assigned that little bit of insanity to their god concept. It's worked for others, so it will work for them. That's what's great about making up your own god: it gets to be whatever you need it to be. You can pick and choose attributes you like and reject the ones you don't, and it hides your insanity to some degree from others who use the same tool.

It's only painfully transparent to those of us who can see quite clearly that people are the authors of their own gods.

It gives them license to be unaccountable for their own actions and behaviors. When you pretend to believe that a god can pardon or absolve you from your own behavior, it sets a huge precedent for people do sanctioned evil.

Of course, there’s no god, deleting your sins from a heavenly data center, so this is really about personal identity, tribalism, and larping. I know I know, most of them believe it. That’s why they’re called sheep. They’re to be fleeced and their lives sacrificed for the sociopaths who use them.

Do I give two craps how the conservative ones feel about anything any more? No. They’re evil masquerading as saints. Demons dressed up in Christian drag.

Yes. Personal identity is the fuel from which their created god is created, and it's easy for them to believe it because it's their own invention and it appeals to them.

Being sheep is a byproduct of the stupidity that comes with needing to rely on a god idea. If they were smart, their god would command them to not be sheep. I mean, your god can be anything... but they aren't that thoughtful. They created their own gods, but are still influenced by the manipulation of other people.

Christ, religion makes people sign up to be dumb.

This seems consistent with or related to Steven Weinberg's famous quote:

“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.
But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”
