I don't know for sure whether the quote was originally hers or whether she was quoting someone else, but I think this should resonate with every honest, caring person, whether religious or not. What do you all think about that?Taylor Tomlinson wrote:If there is a God, he is not here to make you better than everyone else, he is here to make you better for everyone else.

My Favorite Quote of the Week
Sometimes seriously profound quotes come from standup comedians in their serious moments.
No precept or claim is more suspect or more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

I think I've shared enough for you to know this quote sits well with me.

Yes! I had no doubt you would agree with that quote. Thanks for confirming that!Jersey Girl wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 4:24 amI think I've shared enough for you to know this quote sits well with me.

I love hearing people make assertions about the god they've assumed. It tells me nothing about the purported supernatural realm, but it tells me something they value and a little bit about their personality.Gunnar wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 3:00 amSometimes seriously profound quotes come from standup comedians in their serious moments.I don't know for sure whether the quote was originally hers or whether she was quoting someone else, but I think this should resonate with every honest, caring person, whether religious or not. Vengeful people believe in a vengeful god. Jealous people believe in a jealous god. Homophobic people believe in a homophobic god. Accepting people believe in an accepting god. And so on and so on. I've never heard anyone say something like, "I know god wants us to accept immigrants, but I can't buy into that." A person's god always agrees with the person who created it.
Getting people to describe their god is the ultimate Rorschach test.
As to the sentiment expressed, it's a nice thought, but again, it just tells me what that person believes about people and nothing about an actual supernatural entity.
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense. It's also the favored cover for hypocrites.
The god idea is popular with desperate people.

Some say God is just a reflection of the believer, and if that’s true, you’re a good Christian Jersey Girl.Jersey Girl wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 4:24 amI think I've shared enough for you to know this quote sits well with me.

Yeah. Funny, that. I wonder why it always turns out that way? Some Schmo wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 9:18 amA person's god always agrees with the person who created it.

That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

I meant to say something like this about both Jersey Girl and Gunnar. The quote resonates with both of them, and they both have always struck me as above average decent.Doctor CamNC4Me wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 9:34 amSome say God is just a reflection of the believer, and if that’s true, you’re a good Christian Jersey Girl.Jersey Girl wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 4:24 amI think I've shared enough for you to know this quote sits well with me.
The quote resonates with me too (especially lately). But now that I typed that, it makes me sound like I'm bragging, given that I'm claiming it's a reflection of character. I could just delete it before hitting "submit..."

Obviously, whether that quote resonates with someone reflects on their conception of what a believable god necessarily ought to be, which is an indication of their own character and what they choose to believe. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2026 4:17 pmI meant to say something like this about both Jersey Girl and Gunnar.
