Finally Bobby Zimmerman gets his biopic! Flick is 2 hours long. I know I probably can't be in the theater that long so I'll get it on DVD or streaming services. Looks like it'll take a while to adjust to the actors but still...think it'll be awesome!
What a long and storied career. What a story! I hope it shows the shift in his music from acoustic to electric. Protest/Folk to rock to country to gospel. Also his religious/spiritual shifts. Would love it if they addressed that as well!

Here's the real deal. Electric guitars. Biggest FU song of a generation. Hands down.

I feel cautious, so many people always fitting Bob into their own picture. He didn't much like that. I do not blame him there are weird pictures people create. I suppose I am not guiltless. I looked on google about rolling stone and was sent to some reviewer with an article saying the song like a rolling stone is poorly put together and Ballad of a thin man is best on the record. That reviewer is an idiot.Jersey Girl wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2024 4:49 amFinally Bobby Zimmerman gets his biopic! Flick is 2 hours long. I am partial to highway 61, "just set some bleachers out in the sun and we will have it out highway 61"
And lIke a rolling stone is not much about fighting audiences clinging to folk purism. That was a weird problem but Bob was pursuing his interests. Listen to the whole album to get a better idea of what is happening.
Besides Bob as protest singer is overblown. The vast majority of songs on his early albums are not protest. The bootlegs have even less. Yes he did several good protest songs one of which became very popular. I have an ancient Dylan songbook whose last material is Like a Rolling Stone. It has listing of recordings released of his songs by other people. There are over 50 versions of Blowing in the Wind listed.

Jersey Girl, thanks for posting this, it got me thinking. I checked out some reviews of the movie and they are pretty positive so it makes sense to look forward to a chance to see it one way or the other.
I was kind of hoping the subject would spark at least a bit of discussion, but perhaps the subject is convoluted and old enough to put people off.
Any fans have opinions about the late recording like Modern Times? The music has a lot of drive, the words are so elusive. Well they suggest and create images, one can get carried along but in a rather odd way.
If I ask myself what are my favorite Dylan songs I find myself uncertain. He has made strong impressions in a variety of ways through much of my life. I remember in junior high a class had a folk music party teacher playing a variety of records. It was all the sweet voices and harmonies of early 60s popular folk music largely forgotten now. He then pulled out a copy of Bob’s first album and said here is something different and played it. I was stunned in a positive way, on the other hand a couple of girls ran from the room, exclaiming he sings awful.
I like his early stuff and will listen to that first album from time to time. Yesterday I listened to some of great white wonder, a copy of copy received from a friend some years ago. I still enjoy those folk club recordings.

huck I'm just bringing your post forward so I don't forget to reply. I'm sort of jumping around here at the house and in and out on the thread.huckelberry wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 7:51 pmJersey Girl, thanks for posting this, it got me thinking. I have Dylan LP's in my collection. All my LP's have been stored in the basement far too long with our Sansui 6500 Quad. I'm planning to set it up right there where I have an additional craft space and power it up to my heart's content. I don't care what anyone says, digital is nothing compared to a needle. Plus I'm afraid there's too much pitch correction and tweaking going on these days. Forget it. I want the real recording.
Probably could use a new needle just for good measure. And...good lucking finding that but I will!

Jersey Girl, cd may have limitations though how significant may very with the production of the cd. I have not had a device to play vinyl for a long time, for better or worse.
I just finished watching "Don't Look Back" the documentary fallowing Dylan around during his English tour before electric guitar though he performs Mr Tamborine Man all acoustic. I had seen pieces of this rather long movie before but never the whole thing. The slighting of Donovan was not as mean as I had heard it suggested. Donovan managed to sound like a pale Bob imitation on his own. There are bits of private singing Hank Williams songs in the hotel. There is a fragment of Baez singing Love is just a four letter word with Dylan admitting he hadn't figured out how to end that song yet.
That movie is a mix of some interesting pieces and some boring rambling about. There is an interview with a magazine reporter where in Bob is a bit of a self important jerk. He was trying to avoid being pigeon holed at the time of course. He was straight forward in saying he would not explain any meaning of the songs. I understand he has kept that position for a long time now.
Scenes of his guitar playing are clear that his abilities are strong enough to be effective even if there is no reason to think of him as a guitar virtuoso. I have seen Bob once. It was early 90s in a park with relatively small space making a pleasantly intimate performance. I was fairly close. Bob did a bunch of lead electric guitar work. Quite passible guitar work even if not super. I think Bob’s music talent lies in the match of sound rhythm and words, not fancy music.
