The Divided States of America

Post by Res Ipsa »

I stumbled upon a preprint of an interesting study. We’re all familiar with the concept of siloing— how Americans are increasing choosing to associate with people who share their politics. This study looked at what depends within each silo. Do people tend to form ties with people within the group that have more extreme or more moderate views than theirs. The results fell between always more extreme and always the same. If true, that means the groups are pushing themselves to become more extreme over time.

It’s a preprint, so it has not yet been peer reviewed. And it appears to be the first study of its type. If this process is happening, I think it would be important to understand why this happens.
