Good to hear it all, especially the last part!
Thanks very much! I don't know how much longer I need this oxygen. I've named the hose Nagini.

As in...Nagini. Come.
You crack me up. I should name my CPAP hose.

I named it when I was out of my mind at the start of the Prednisone! Actually talked to it out loud when I said, "Nagini. Come."

I wish I had a video camera on me the first 2 days at home, it would have made for a very interesting show! Complete raving loon.

True Pandemic Death Toll More Than Double Official Count, Says World Health Organization
Scientists tasked by WHO with calculating the actual number of COVID-19 deaths between January 2020 and the end of last year estimated there were between 13.3 million and 16.6 million deaths that were either caused directly by the coronavirus or were somehow attributed to the pandemic’s impact on health systems, like people with cancer unable to seek treatment when hospitals were full of COVID patients.

The figures are based on country-reported data and statistical modeling. WHO did not immediately break down the figures to distinguish between direct deaths from COVID-19 and others caused by the pandemic.

“This may seem like just a bean-counting exercise, but having these WHO numbers is so critical to understanding how we should combat future pandemics and continue to respond to this one,” said Albert Ko, an infectious diseases specialist at the Yale School of Public Health who was not linked to the WHO research. For example, Ko said, South Korea’s decision to invest heavily in public health after it suffered a severe outbreak of MERS allowed it to escape COVID-19 with a per-capita death rate around a 20th of that of the U.S.

Accurate numbers on COVID-19 deaths have been problematic throughout the pandemic, as the figures are only a fraction of the devastation wrought by the virus, largely because of limited testing and differences in how countries count COVID-19 deaths. According to government figures reported to WHO and to a separate count kept by Johns Hopkins University, there have been more than 6 million reported coronavirus deaths to date.

I may have dodged a bullet. Still waiting to see. While on my way to pick up my 83 year old mom, I received a text from a friend letting me know I'd been exposed to COVID. Four of us who have been ultra careful throughout the pandemic played a board game outdoors on Saturday. That's a low risk scenario that I'm comfortable with. But it was outside my FLGS (Friendly Local Game Store), which it seems has become a source of transmission. One owner and two employees have contracted the disease in the last few weeks. And, while I wear an N-95 in the store, this weekend it was jammed with Magic players for a pre-release event. Hardly anyone was masked, and apparently the HEPA filtration units didn't do the trick.

My friend became symptomatic Monday but didn't test positive until yesterday. I've had allergy symptoms on and off for a couple months (bad pollen season here), and haven't noticed anything different. I took a home test yesterday -- negative. I'll take one again this evening. If it's negative, I'll schedule a PCR for tomorrow just to confirm.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 is ripping through the school where Ms. Ipsa teaches. She still wears a mask, but she's one of the few adults.

I've drafted the two kids still at home to do something I've been putting off: building a couple of Corsi-Rosenthal boxes.

Transmission seems to be down a little, as BA.2 seemed to be the source of our fairly small wave. But BA 2.12.1 is on the rise, with BA 5 right behind it. I planned to use this wave as a "test case" before going back to the office. Now I think I'll continue to work from home until they drag me back downtown. (Actually, my employer has been excellent about letting folks continue to work remotely, so I'm not worried about being summoned back downtown.)

Now to batten down the hatches for the atmospheric river that's coming to visit for the next few days...

RI did you live? What is going on there with you? What about these new variants...are they weak yet more contagious like the first ones? I need to read up on those.

Knock 3 on the lid times if you're alive in there. Or post something.

It’s been a week since exposure and I’m fine. No symptoms. Negative home tests. Apparently only one of our boardgaming foursome got infected, and he’s getting better.

BA 2.12.1 is reportedly the most contagious yet, but no more severe than vanilla Omicron. I think it’s the sub variant most responsible for the recent wave in New England.

I don’t know that much about BA 4 or BA 5. Early days. Hopefully Moderna’s new bivalent vaccine will help with all these Omicron subvariants that don’t seem to confer much immunity against each other.

Some of the Epi folks I follow on Twitter are getting sick of the bots and trolls, so I’m finding it harder to keep current.

ETA: This article is consistent with what I’ve read about BA 4 and 5. https://www.verywellhealth.com/omicron-ba4-ba5-5324953

I'm happy to hear you dodged this! I'm so tired of Covid and trying to follow it's many variants but we're still in a pandemic and this is no time for any of us to get lax about prevention.

I think the only time I'm never not masked publicly is outdoors. I hardly ever seen people masked inside buildings these days unless it's a doctor's office. I'll mask forever if I feel like it. I'm used to it.

Thanks for the information. I'll check on these myself.

Anthony Fauci Tests Positive for Coronavirus

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, has tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and is experiencing mild symptoms.

The 81-year-old Fauci is fully vaccinated and has received two boosters.

“Today, Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, and Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden, tested positive for COVID-19 on a rapid antigen test. He is fully vaccinated and has been boosted twice.” the NIH said in a statement. “He is currently experiencing mild symptoms. Dr. Fauci will isolate and continue to work from his home. He has not recently been in close contact with President Biden or other senior government officials. Dr. Fauci will follow the COVID-19 guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and medical advice from his physician and return to the NIH when he tests negative.”

"Ajax, you're an idiot. If you practice social distancing and get vaccinated, you won't get COVID. You've got blood on your hands for going to work and trying to make a living."
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

81 years old, and mild symptoms. Right on.

I've heard rumors that there are some people in their 70s who got COVID, while not vaccinated, and had to be transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment. Rumor also is that they had the best immune system. Some doctors described it as incredible, and the white blood cells as stable geniuses.

As opposed to unvaccinated Trump who was on his ass so bad he had to be threatened with being transported out of the White House on a stretcher or in a wheel chair because he's a gigantic dumbass. Guess the bleach didn't work. Like almost a cleaning.
