Some of President Donald Trump's supporters apparently intended to kidnap Vice President Mike Pence and execute him if he didn't overturn their election loss.
The president's supporters stormed into the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, as Pence presided over the congressional certification of Joe Biden's election win, and video captured some of them threatening to execute the vice president -- who Trump had singled out in a speech just minutes before they burst into the building.
"Hang Mike Pence, hang Mike Pence," the crowd chanted as alarms sounded after the mob broke into the Capitol.
Photographs show some rioters carrying flex cuffs used as restraints by law enforcement and a gallows set up outside the Capitol, and the vice president was taken to safety, along with lawmakers, congressional staffers and reporters, after the president's supporters broke in.
"I heard at least 3 different rioters at the Capitol say that they hoped to find Vice President Mike Pence and execute him by hanging him from a Capitol Hill tree as a traitor," reported Reuters photographer Jim Bourg. "It was a common line being repeated. Many more were just talking about how the VP should be executed."
Capitol Hill reporter Andrew Feinberg said the rioters were looking for Pence, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer House Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- whose office was ransacked by the president's supporters.
Trump had falsely claimed to supporters ahead of the march that Pence had the "absolute right" under the U.S. Constitution to throw out election results for Biden, and the president pressured his running mate to take action -- which the vice president said he could not lawfully do.
"I hope Mike is gonna do the right thing," Trump told supporters. "I hope so. I hope so, because if Mike Pence does the right thing, we win the we win the election."
A Trump supporter who spoke to local news outlet CBS17 said the crowd in D.C. turned violent after hearing reports that Pence would not help the president overturn his election loss.
"People got news on their phone that Mike Pence said he is not going to object to these seven states, and he was going to accept the electoral college that promotes [President-elect Joe] Biden," she explained. "That is when everybody got really upset and that's when they started storming."

But at this terrible time for the nation's peace and security, people like you are sowing dissension by your relentless attacks on your fellow-citizens who simply venture to disagree with your liberal shibboleths. You are going to start a new Civil War if you carry on like this. Shame on you!

No, a much more imminent threat is by those who attack the very foundation of our democracy. Speaking in soothing tones to those who continually spout lies will not discourage them. When you actively embrace any politician and the machinery which enables him (Fox News, etc...) some resistance must be offered.
As Rabbi Penguinstock so aptly put it, "We might turn the other cheek when they come for our coffee, but we must put our foot down when they come for our coffee ice cream". As Paddy O'Penguin would say, "I will beat you liberally with my shibboleth".

I was, like, being satirical.
But if even penguins are turning deadly serious, it is perhaps understandable given the current spectacle of a US president in office, inciting violent attacks on a joint session of Congress.
And at present it seems doubtful whether the Senate will actually vote to impeach him.

There is some fairly good photographic evidence that there were some individuals in the crowd who came with the intent of doing harm to Pence or members of Congress. A couple men had zip-tie style handcuffs, and one of them appeared to be armed. There is evidence that someone knew in advance where the offices of key members of Congress were located, as well as other offices they commonly used as work rooms. Investigating those individuals is probably job one of the FBI. Whether chanting sheep actually had the intent to harm is pretty questionable. Appalling, yes. Evidence of intent? Probably not.

But that some of the rioters, chanting or not, did intend harm to Pence and others is beyond any shadow of doubt!
Beyond a shadow of a doubt is a pretty high burden of proof. We should be very careful not to attribute the intent of some in the group to all in the group. Otherwise, we're led to conclude that, say, because anarchists embed themselves in a peaceful protest, the protest wasn't peaceful.
