Maybe Inspiration

Hey Guys,

I feel like writing about something. Feel free to skip it or respond in kind if you have something to say that seems to fit. I know that the current situation (political, health crisis, etc.) is difficult to ride out for many or most of us. Probably going to be some God stuff in this but I honestly think that what I want to say could be viewed through either a believing or non-believing lens.

The other day I had 2 guys from a local ministry come pick up some pieces of furniture to give to folks in need. The one guy was telling me about what people are asking for, what they accept "anything that makes a house a home" and we sort of engaged in a conversation about what we see going on locally and in the world.

I shared with him that I basically believe God has given humanity a chance to reset it's priorities, focus on what matters, and that since everyone is impacted one way or another (all over the world in fact) that the take away is going to be something different for each person. I actually believe that however difficult things may seem to be that God has handed us a gift. The gift to choose what we will do with the challenges that we face.

In some of my last comments to him I shared my philosophy (same one I've shared here many times) that I believe that we are meant to be Gods helping hands and boots on the ground and the end goal was to love one another in whatever way is possible for us to do so. I think that comes into play right now or maybe my world view is skewed in that direction. I dunno...as I said just now in another post, my glass is always half full and/or I'm to stubborn to surrender. In this case, surrender to dark energy if you will.

This pandemic is the first time in my life that I had to accept that I couldn't do the things I normally would join in doing in a community because I'm in an at-risk category. Never in my life have I had to tell myself "You can't just go do that." That's pretty frustrating.

Anyway...a story about my little neck of the woods and then another.

My community has it's own private Facebook group. It's how we stay connected in a rural community where the houses and properties are so spread out. Under these trees we have a diverse community. One of the reasons I love it so much. We have people living in McMansions, trailers, old cabins, middle of the roaders (that's us). We have old folks, young folks, hippies, farmers, military (active and retired) ranchers, professionals. No 2 houses are the same. No one is in competition out here. We live and let live. Mainly people moved out here to get away from people but it is a community where if you slide off the road in a blizzard, more than one vehicle would stop to yank you out of a ditch. It's just like that. We care about each other, we just don't want to be on top of each other. It's like...leave us lone...but let someone know if you need help. :-)

Going back to when we were on full on lock down, stay the hell home, only go out for essentials, a woman posted that she was going into town to the grocery story, that she had $300 bucks in cash and if anyone at-risk needed anything she'd take and deliver orders until the $300 bucks ran out.

Who does that, right? We didn't need anything for ourselves but several residents benefited from her generosity that day. I shared on our old board that the local pizza place offered to let residents piggyback their supplies orders for food, cleaning products or paper goods. That's how I got a case of bleach. Another hydroponics farm started giving away produce (greens) every Friday at the end of their drive way. Others starting giving away eggs from their chickens or charging competitively to regular stores. Also ranchers offering deals on meat raised out here.

Well, I want to tell you what I saw happen today. On my way home from grocery pick up, I saw 2 pick ups at different locations that were flying USA and Trump flags. I rolled my eyes when I saw them. I don't know how people are so enthusiastic about a political candidate that they have to parade around flying their colors or whatever. No one gets that from me so I don't fully understand how anyone could be so in the tank for any candidate and that includes Biden as well. I look voting as a hiring process. End of story.

So when I got into my little town I decided to pass by a gather place we have here up in the woods. It's the same folks who put together a Farmer's Market every weekend this summer for us. This year, the decided to do a Trunk or Treat for the children of the community (because you can't really trick or treat house to house out here anyway plus the pandemic) because by golly, they were gonna make it happen, so I drove by to see how it was shaping up for tonight.

Oh. My. God. Even before starting time, cars were lined up on both sides of the road, down the street, around the corner, in the church parking lots and all I saw were lines and lines of children in costume with eyes smiling from over their masks, parents in costume, pets in costume...and if you looked down to where the Farmer's Market was you could see all the vehicles with the trunks with treats waiting for the little tricksters to walk in and they even had a wild west town thing to take H'ween photos in front of.

It was Ah-MAZING!!!

The children GOT their Halloween just as the sun started to set on a cool Autumn early evening, they got to get together with all the other children on this special day, get out, be seen, and bag up that candy! A little spooky adventure that adults had made just for them!

Can you imagine? Imagine yourself say a 5 year old. You've been hanging at home for months, maybe you got to go to school or you had to do solitary e-learning, you became distanced from your friends, you didn't even know if there would BE a Halloween this year--would anyone get to see you in your costume? And then you go to this humongous gathering where all the children came out of their houses, parents and even dogs, and all of that was done just for YOU.

Wow. Yes, I cried on the way home and yes, by the time I got home I decided that if they do this next year I'm trucking my trunk out there so I can interact with the children. I miss interacting with groups of young children. <3

So here is the thing I wanted to convey most of all. When I look at what is going on in the world, I envision the politicians floating around above us playing their games, throwing their political footballs back and forth, never really accomplishing anything, and basically out of touch.

On the other hand, I envision most of the rest of us, each with two feet planted firmly on the ground, taking care of each other, helping hands, boots on the ground, religious or not, and making stuff happen on our OWN.

We've been doing it the whole time.

Everyone who made a mask, who shared a product, who checked in with a friend or relative, who gave someone a chance to be heard, who offered to pick up groceries, or meds, or give away micro greens for free, or create a whole Halloween Trunk or Treat Western experience for the children, who thought of the children, who thought of each other, who donated a coupla bucks or items to whatever the cause.

We're the ones who make things happen for each other, not the politicians. Can we use their help and support? Sure. If they don't come through can we come through for ourselves and each other? Yes!

And in every way that matters.

Don't lose hope. Don't cave to the dark energy. See what you can do for someone around you. If you need help for yourself, don't hesitate to reach out.

And just keep in touch with us here. I need you guys some days! Just being able to let off steam or share something positive. It helps me. Please keep that in mind the next time I take aim at you for something. It won't last long, I promise.

:-)

Okay, I'm done. Got a story to share?

Sort of a random association/thought:

If we ever get to go to crowded movie theater again, here's a fun game to play:

If you are in a scary part of the part of the movie, watch people unconsciously move their heads together. You can see who went with whom. In suprising ways, we look to each other for comfort.

After San Francisco's big quake in '89, people wanted to buy the newspaper so badly the Chronicle delivery driver couldn't even get out of his truck. A line formed and people politely gave the driver 50 cents. Strangers would talk about where they were when it happened. A lot of polite social barriers seem to melt away. I'm sure there are a million 9/11 stories in New York. A tragedy can bind us together.

It also can leave a scar. The Covid years will be like a different version of the Great Depression, which created a lot of psychological scars for many Americans. I will bet you dollars to dounuts that someone is working on a script called COVID-35, about an even deadlier pandemic in 2035. The world will be jittery about public health scares for years to come.

While I love the many ways that people come together in times like this, I fear the bigger lesson is being lost: Human hubris about our place on this planet. Before we are political beings, we are biological entities, which makes us inmates in a bilogical prison from which there is no escape. Instead of recognizing that reality, people choose to confront an enemy with no DNA like it is an assault on human liberty. COVID-19 doesn't give a crap about human liberty, it only cares for one thing: Are you a place where I can grow? And yet people continue to frame the fight as if Covid were the nemesis in a Ayn Rand novel.

For 5,000 years human beings have been able to create political systems, economic systems and social systems. For a long time, mankind saw its struggle was to 'conquer nature', and in many respects we have. But with Covid and Global Warming, we are being reminded of the biological realities from which there is no escape. Political, social and economic sytems that do not recognize our biological interdependence with this biosphere are doomed.

Isn't a humongous gathering far more dangerous for spreading the coronavirus than standard trick-or-treating?

See the second half of the post where you separated it by using elipses? In the second half I made clear that I was speaking from a child's perspective. Check that again where I said "Imagine yourself say a 5 year old". Here's the para.

Can you imagine? Imagine yourself say a 5 year old. What you did there was piece together parts of 2 paras. One was from an adult point of view. The second was from the child's point of view.

So...to answer your question.

The gathering was outdoors.
It was humongous from a child's perspective
Masks were required.
Social distancing was in place.

State guidelines were followed for the venue the same way they were followed for the outdoor Farmer's Market.

There IS no standard Trick or Treating out here where the houses are spread far apart. I mentioned that detail of what the rural area is like where we live. So yeah, no. Standard Trick or Treating happens in town. Not out here. Some of the churches will do a kind of fall festival but not this year. Most families seem to go into town to go door-to-door. This year, the organizers of the event determined to do an outdoor event so the children could have Halloween right in their hometown and be safe. LDS did theirs yesterday. Hopefully some smart LDS children did double duty by attending today's event.
