Timelines?

Post by Jersey Girl »

Hey All,

Does anyone know off hand of a good program or website I can use to make a timeline? I'd prefer a vertical display instead of horizontal but that's only because that's how my brain sees things. I'd take a horizontal display if that's all that's available. What I'm looking to do is to take the Scottish heritage family history timeline that I made a few years back and merge it with a timeline of historical events that parallel it. Does that make sense? This goes with what I am learning in an online class about the Scottish Clans and their decline due to socio-economic and political factors. If I could work in a timeline of historical events in the America's that'd be icing on the cake.

Please don't go searching around on my account. Just if anyone knows right away of a website or generator of some kind, would you please name it or link me to it here?

Thanks a ton!

Jersey

p.s. My real motivation is to try to take a crack at discerning or intuiting why my ancestors may have emigrated from Scotland to the U.S. I've got too much "stuff" in my head from this class not to want to put it down on a timeline. I've got a sort of a timeline that starts at the Jacobite Uprising. I want to go backwards in time, put in the Jacobite material and then move forward.

If you mean a family tree kind of presentation then, no. What I would like to see is a set of 3 parallel vertical lines where I can write in:

1. Family history
2. Scottish historical events
3. Historical events in America

And bring them forward to when my ancestors emigrated. Does that make any sense at all?

If they had to be horizontal in presentation, I'd be okay with that.

Let me try to give unrelated events that I am talking about just for the purpose of example. None of these have any connection whatsoever.

1. Family History Line: Jersey's dog passes away.
2. Scottish historical events: Scots go into Level 4 Pandemic Lockdown
3. Historical events in America: Trump incites an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building.

I'm probably not making good sense. I'm working through the remainder of my class right now. What I am trying to do, as I said, is to line up historical events (such as mass emigration from Scotland to the U.S.) to see if I can intuit reasons why my ancestors may have left their homeland. Then, I want to back fill the timeline going back in time to when my family clan intersects the history of Scotland at the Battle of Culloden. I can even go backwards in time to 360-something A.D. to fill in the historical references to the clan. I know...this probably sounds like craziness right now.

Forgive me. My head is full of so much information right now. Thank you for trying to help me.

If you are still looking I use SmartDraw for all my process flows and timelines. If you're more comfortable with the Microsoft Suite then Visio has some fairly robust timeline capabilities. If you just need something cheap/free and fairly basic you could also probably use Gliffy. It is an in-browser option that is simple to get started and playing around with.

It is just the most basic SmartDraw example but is that what you were thinking?

Thanks for the recommends Xeno! I was actually wanting a vertical display and I think I found one. I'll check those recommends you provided to see if they have what I am looking for.
