I’m aggravated that the article is sticking with ‘two unnamed sources familiar with the story’ for the basis of the story. It could be anybody, to include the author of the article.

Yeah, it does cast doubt.
This is one of those, "I'm not sure it's true, but it sure sounds damned true" kind of stories.

It is increasingly obvious that what Trump is really mad about is the refusal of the justice department and other government agencies to promote and back up his lies. Willingness to repeat and double down on supporting Trump's lies, especially the big one about the election being stolen from him, is the primary condition or qualification for any Republican running for office to get Trump's endorsement. The last thing in the world he is concerned about is the truth, seemingly sometimes even when the truth actually benefits him! It almost seems like he is deliberately trying to see how many lies he can get people to believe. He has all but come right out and said, forget what is real and provable; believe me instead!

In the 'Republican Party has gone full circle' department, one of the earliest and greatest satirists of American Politics was Thomas Nast, who was against the corruption of the Democratic Party. Boss Tweed in New York eventually offered Nast $500,000 ($11,000,000 today) if he would 'study abroad' and cease the satire.
Nash refused.
Nash's cartoons helped elect Abraham Lincoln.
Remember when George H.W. Bush had Dana Carvey spend the night at the White House? Certainly Carvey's impression was kinder and gentler than Alec Baldwin's, but so was the man being imitated.
Nothing pops the bubble of grandiosity like satire. You think Jimmy Carter or Gerald Ford would get mad over satire? They were humble men. Popping the bubble of self-importance doesn't mean anything if you're not that self-important.

The only thing Trump has is propaganda. He doesn't have any skills (except speaking moron fluently). He's a useless waste of space. Worse that that, he's a corrupt, malevolent waste of space.
The illusion of importance is all he has. Well, that and American morons thinking he's important. Unfortunately, there are too many American morons, which is why he's in the news.
I'm still mad at KFC for not doing to Trump what its food is reputed to do.
