iv. times chains

Is this the end my love?
The dark descent my love?
is this the end?

Time has her chains,
come what may,
We live in loneliness,
we live in pain.
Time has her names,
the night, the day.
We live in separateness,
we live in vain.

Is this the end my love?
The dark descent my love?
Is this the end?

Time has her chains,
but where is the key?
The shadows of paradise
are all I can see.
Time has no conscience,
no way to grieve:
The shadows of paradise
are still haunting me.

Is this the end my love?
The dark descent my love?
Is this the end?

v. crying (ii)

I know you’re leaving,
that you can’t stay.
Baby I’m not one
to stand in your way.

When someone doesn’t need you
and you know they won’t lie,
one of you will live
and another will die.

She opened doors
I had to close.
She said the words
I don’t want to know.
She gave me memories
I can never forget.
She broke my heart
on the day we met.

No there isn’t anything
I can ever do,
to change the way
that I feel about you.

When someone tells you good bye
and you know the reasons why,
one of you will forget
and the other will cry.

She showed me love
that I can’t return.
She took me down roads
from which I must turn.
She lifted me high
and then let me fall.
She gave me everything
and then nothing at all.

And my spirit is crying.
My spirit is crying,
crying, crying ...

She opened doors
I had to close.
She said the words
I don’t want to know.
She gave me memories
I can never forget.
She broke my heart
on the day we met.

i. annihilation of illusion

There is no use
in trying to pretend,
I always knew
it would be a bitter end.

Not a chance in hell
for redemption.
There is no peace now
in recognition.

As a little boy
I was taught,
now I live in
what I’ve been caught.
A trap from which
I can’t escape,
the desires of which
my dreams are made.

There is no use
in trying to pretend,
there is nothing left
but the dark descent.

Not a chance in hell
for redemption.
There is no peace now
in recognition.

A life of illusion:
what time has wrought,
A life of delusion:
which I have fought.
Believing in lies:
the ties that bind,
longing to be free
but chained to time.

As a little boy
I was taught,
now I live in
what I’ve been caught.
A trap from which
I can’t escape,
the desires of which
my dreams are made.

ii. dregs of a poet’s cup (iii)

I open my eyes
and I comprehend,
the future still waits for me
up around the bend.

Drawn again to reverie:
(a state of mind that comforts me),
I can’t help once more questioning
what time has let me see.

Unrequited love.
No answers from above.
Only scars upon
the soul.
Lost innocence:
so many passages
and the pain
of being alone.

A mind full of expression
these dregs of a poets cup,
nothing more and nothing less
than comprehension of hate and love.

Making rhythm like a melody
or discordant as a raucous song,
these dregs reveal the imagery
that move us all along.

Unrequited love.
No answers from above.
Only scars upon
the soul.
Lost innocence:
so many passages
and the pain
of being alone.

iii. beguiled (iii)

State of mind,
state of grace:
if that’s what you
want to call this place.

Heart of glass,
heart of stone:
time to reap what
time has sown.

Staring back
with cold blue eyes,
I know the mirror
never lies.

We hope and we dream
it will come out right eventually.
And if time brings love
it also brings change;
loneliness, a bitter end:
the memories to which
we are chained.
— The Lost Books of Kaladon, (circa 1992 A.D.)

"Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you
-- like music to the musician ... -- or else it is nothing,
an empty, formalized bore around which pedants
can endlessly drone their notes and explanations."
— F. Scott Fitzgerald, (circa 1940 A.D.)

"It was always the becoming he dreamed of, never the being."
— F. Scott Fitzgerald, (circa 1940 A.D.)

i. crossing

I cross the darkness
and come again into the light,
tasting the sweetness
of another timely flight.

I cross the barriers
into the world of dreams,
a world beyond the darkness
of all my silent screams.

Where the songs come
into the open mind,
for the dream is the sum
and the lyric is the find.

I cross the boundary
of space and time,
beyond the threshold of pain
crossing tracks in my mind.

I cross the barrier
into the world of dreams,
a world beyond the sorrows
of things both heard and seen.

Where the songs come
into the open mind,
for the dream is the sum
and the lyric is the find.

But be careful where you dare to dream:
for this world is not quite what it seems.

ii. somnolence and dreams

Silently I lay me down
to somnolence and dreams.
Once again the distant realms
bid me to partake it seems.

Of fair fruit and flowing mead,
all the stuff of childish dreams,
of tender hearts and daring deeds:
and visions of romantic teens.

Where young men practice the arts of war
that will sow the seeds of bitterness,
gradually laying up in store
those middle years of discontent.

Knowing in time they somehow lost
what they can’t buy back at any cost,
though some with vanity will pretend
to gain some measure back again.

Silently I lay me down
to somnolence and dreams,
once again those distant realms
bid me to partake it seems.

Of fair fruit and flowing mead,
all the stuff of childish dreams:
sometimes getting just what I need,
at least that’s what I’d like to believe.

Lost again this side of paradise
closing my eyes and never thinking twice,
wrapped up in the cloak of Morpheus,
waiting for what he alone can show us.

Of fair fruit and flowing mead,
all the stuff of childish dreams:
sometimes getting just what I need,
at least that’s what I need to believe.

iii. morning of desire

Once upon a time he came
among the sons of men,
knee bowed and spirit chained:
full of childhood innocence.

A spell was cast
and words were spoken.
A soul was masked
and memories were broken.

Given the chance to dream.

Standing at the threshold
of a new reality,
conceived like Perseus
in a dream of gold:
eternal child
lost now in a parody,
the morning of desire
about to unfold.
*

Once upon a time he came
among the sons of men,
incarnation of youth, desire unchained:
full of childhood innocence.

A spell was cast
and words were spoken.
A soul was masked
and memories were broken.

Given the chance to dream.

Standing at the threshold
of a new reality,
conceived like Perseus
in a dream of gold:
eternal child
lost now in a parody,
the morning of desire
about to unfold.

*Many thanks to F. Scott Fitzgerald and the wondrous Zelda...
** There is much of Fitzgerald in this Chapter, I dedicate it to his genius.
This is but a poor shadow...

i. close my eyes

I close my eyes and think about
the way things ought to be,
how time keeps driving me towards
the ghosts of yesterday.

Marking time in changes:
feeling the past like a shroud,
covering the lines on these pages
too deep to be spoken out loud.

Feeling that first flush of pain:
that terrible door to the past,
Open wide for me once again
who knows inside the idyll has passed.

Marking time in changes:
feeling the past like a shroud,
covering the lines on these pages
too deep to be spoken out loud.

I close my eyes and think about
doorways in the sands of time,
dreamsongs running through my mind
this side of paradise...

Marking time in changes:
feeling the past like a shroud,
covering the lines on these pages
too deep to be spoken out loud.

ii. cage

I once believed in principles
and that love could save my soul.
That was long before I met her
and she threw me out in the cold,

Leaving me alone.

How is it that we came here,
and what should we expect?
How can we hide from the fears
that come from living with regrets?

Wanting something so bad
always just a dream away,
knowin’ inside that you’ve been had
and things will never be the same.

I once believed in miracles
and thought God would save my soul,
that was long before I met him
and he threw me out in the cold.

Long before I was so old.

Not knowing much about
the way things ought to be,
only living in the here and now
wondering if time will set me free.

Wanting something so bad
always just a dream away,
feeling inside just a little sad
things will never be the same.

iii. first class crazy

I gotta hand it to you baby
you made a fool out of me.
I got your ticket to first class crazy
and I still can’t let it be.

Yeah, I let you get a hold of me:
what will it take to be set free?
I thought love was such a simple thing,
but right now I don’t feel a god damn thing.

Feelin’ worthless as my pocket change
that can’t buy me a pack of cigarettes,
ain’t it funny how it seems so strange
when you know that it ain’t over yet.

Wonderin’ why I’m still here
when inside I feel so dead,
Wonderin’ why it becomes so clear
when you crawl into my bed.

I gotta hand it to you baby
you made a fool out of me.
I got your ticket to first class crazy
and I still can’t make you see.

Yeah, I let you get a hold of me:
what will it take to be set free?
It’s not that I don’t mind knowin’,
when I’m not the only one guilty as sin.

Wonderin’ why I’m still here
when inside I feel so dead,
Wonderin’ why it becomes so clear
when you crawl into my bed.

iv. one love

When love becomes an aching
felt deep within the soul,
Too fine at times to measure
too deep at times to hold.

When words that can’t be spoken
become a price too high to pay,
the memories leave you broken
with nothing but the pain.

One love, one soul
a part of me I can’t let go.
One heart, one mind
all that there was once to find.
One love, one soul
a part of me I can’t let go.

When love becomes a burden
that will never let you go,
left behind to treasure
but never meant to grow

Then time becomes a labyrinth
holding the soul itself at bay.
To answer for all those mortal sins
that give us reason to pray.

And here I am growin’ old,
I’m growin’ old ...

One love, one soul
a part of me I can’t let go.
One heart, one mind
all that there was once to find.
One love, one soul
a part of me I can’t let go.

i. course of fate

Have you been there lately
and did it feel like a friend?
Will you ever get there again?
Feeling a little bit crazy
thinking about it every now and then.

And I’m sure you can relate
if you’ve been there yourself,
for to see the course of fate
can take you to the depths of hell.

Blue shadowed walls
in the reaches of my mind,
tower above the logic
reasoning hearts cannot find.
Brightwater canyons:
nameless pathways of fear,
give no sense of direction
when the future is so unclear.

Have you been there lately
and did it feel like the end,
Will you ever know beginning from end?
Feeling a little bit crazy
thinking about it every now and then.

And I’m sure you can relate
if you’ve been there yourself,
for to see the course of fate
will take you to the depths of hell.

It’s all very well
because I’ve been there myself,
And it’s all very well
because I’ve been there myself,
yeah I’ve been there myself:
Falling into the depths of hell.

Blue shadowed walls
in the reaches of my mind,
tower above the logic
reasoning hearts cannot find.
Brightwater canyons:
nameless pathways of fear,
give no sense of direction
when the future is so unclear.

ii. carry on

I’d like to know where I’m going
and if somebody has the time,
it would be so nice just knowing
that there is something left to find.

It’s a long way to heaven
but I’m afraid I’ll never find my way,
flying high in this 707
is as close as I’m gonna get today.

Got this song playing in my mind
telling me that I just can’t wait,
for that chance to make the big time
and find some immortality.

And when you feel what I’ve been saying
then you’ll know what it’s like to be me.

Carry on, carry on
I gotta carry on,
It’s all I can do.
Carry on, I gotta carry on
as I search myself for the answers
that will come along much too soon.
Carry on, carry on
I gotta carry on,
It’s all I can do.
Carry on, I gotta carry on
but I feel so lost without you.

I spent a season in hell
but only laugh at the memory,
for the pain of that addiction
was much too sweet, much too sweet.

I’ve got a drawer full of memories
and pictures hanging on the wall,
got a friend out there somewhere
that I can’t seem to find at all.

Got a friend out there somewhere
waiting on me much too long.

And the lines on the mirror
seemed to make everything all right,
still I hope that he’ll forgive me
when he knows how much I tried:

To live through all the madness
a human heart can find,
leaving the memories of that time
to try and find a little peace of mind.

And when you feel what I’ve been saying
then you’ll know what It’s like to be me.

Carry on, carry on
I gotta carry on,
It’s all I can do.
Carry on, I gotta carry on
but I feel so lost without you.
Carry on, carry on
I gotta carry on,
It’s all I can do.
Carry on, I gotta carry on
but I feel so lost without you.
I gotta carry on,
I gotta carry on.

I’d like to know where I’m going
but I can’t seem to find my way.
It would be so good just knowing
You had a reason to stay.

iii. below the surface

Time weighs heavy on the soul:
remembered acts of careless
submerged in tide-pools of the heart
that sometimes climb to the surface.

Swimming below the waterlines:
undertows of emotion,
that find a way to briefly rise
before sinking into deeper oceans.

Like Eddies and ripples
driven by the tides,
below the surface
they flow and glide.
Brought near light
from darkling depths:
roused at times from
where they have slept.
The ebb and flow of
changing time:
creating another waterline.

Time is an anchor to my mind:
passing through the consciousness,
surging like a wave to the shoreline
as it swells to the surface.

Those ripples in the waterways:
the currents of strong emotions,
that dance upon this stormy sea
far greater than any ocean.

Like Eddies and ripples
driven by the tides,
below the surface
they flow and glide.
Brought near light
from darkling depths:
roused at times from
where they had slept.
The ebb and flow of
changing time:
creating another waterline…

iv. used up

Did you ever want to die
for love?
Well, I did once.

And it took a little time,
a little time to realize
That there wasn’t too much
worth dying for.

You only get
so much emotion,
and you’ve got
to be careful
not to use it all up.
Putting that ‘ol heart
in motion,
just to drink from
a bitter cup.

You can get so used up.

Did you ever want to die
for love?
Well, I did once.

And it took a little time,
a little time to realize
That there isn’t too much
worth dying for.

You only get
so much emotion,
and you’ve got
to be careful
not to use it all up.
Putting that ‘ol heart
in motion,
just to drink from
a bitter cup.

You can get so used up.

v. worn away

Born as a man
(a most noble disguise,)
it seemeth to me
the fool has grown wise.

Worn away
in the name
of charity.
Grown weary of
makeshift philosophies
composed by grasping
human minds,
of which we all
have been consigned.

We know in part
and the rest we dream,
this is our anthem
and our requiem.

Dreamsongs
of the immortal mind,
revealed to all
who seek to find.

But I know not the causes
of what we tentatively call:
the REM’s of our
unconscious nightfall.

Born as a man
(a most noble disguise),
it seemeth to me
the fool has grown wise.

Worn away
in the name
of charity.
Grown weary of
makeshift philosophies;
composed by grasping
finite minds,
to which it seems we
have all been consigned.

vi. get used to being used

Girl she's only seventeen
caught in a trap, caught in-between.
First love, so sweet:
she can’t think and she can’t eat.

He took away her innocence
leaving her nothing but pain,
Now she's got nothing (can’t face her friends)
living with that ball and chain.

If you’re a little bit lost
or a little bit confused,
better get used to it baby:
get used to being used.
If you’re a little bit scared
or a little bit blue,
better get used to it baby:
get used to being used.

Better get used to it...

Girl she's barely holdin’ on
caught in a trap, been there too long.
First love, so strong:
she can’t go back, can’t go on.

He took away tomorrow’s promise
leaving her nothing but pain,
now she's got no hope (no place to rest)
living with that ball and chain.

If you’re a little bit lost
or a little bit confused,
take it from me honey:
get used to being used.
If you’re a little bit lonely
or a little bit blue,
don’t ever give in baby:
cause you’re gonna get used.

vii. wastrels

Amazing grace
an amazing waste.
I have seen
what I have seen.

They live and die
in sad disgrace,
sons of perdition:
they have no dreams.

viii. loaded gun

The price is high
who can afford to pay?
You don’t have to buy
if there’s another way.

A loaded, loaded, loaded gun.
A loaded, loaded, loaded gun.
That ____’s got us on the run.

When the night comes
will they do it?
Will we hang on
and get through it?

The time is right
to move on to the next stage.
If we lose the fight
then we will all have to pay.

A loaded, loaded, loaded gun.
A loaded, loaded, loaded gun.
Has got us all on the run.

When the night comes
will we do it?
Will we join them
to live through it?

A loaded, loaded, loaded gun.
A loaded, loaded, loaded gun.
That ____’s got us on the run.

It’s a loaded gun...
It’s a loaded gun...

ix. unresolved

I don’t understand what happened,
I don’t understand at all.
I never meant for this to take place
I never should have taken the fall.

I don’t understand the reasons,
I don’t understand these doubts.
I never meant for this to unfold,
It’s not what I’ve been all about.

Those twisted feelings
so long ignored,
now have no meaning
no meaning at all.
Those tangled feelings
so long ignored,
now have no meaning
no meaning at all.

I don’t understand what happened,
I stood at your side so tall;
when we began this course of action
I never meant to build those walls.

How can I make it without you?
Our plans have all gone astray.
Just what were you trying to prove:
There’s no glory on this bitter day.

Those tangled feelings
so long ignored,
now have no meaning
no meaning at all.
These shattered feelings
still unresolved,
now have no meaning
they’re still un-absolved.

Standing on the brink of despair
in a blaze of light I saw you there:
how well you answered that fateful call
but can anyone tell me the point of it all?

Can anyone tell me the reasons why
The things we love most have to die?

I don’t understand what happened,
I don’t understand at all,
It took no more than a few seconds:
and I was left there to take the fall.

I don’t understand the reasons,
I can’t comprehend the doubts.
I never meant for this treason
to turn my whole world inside out.

Those twisted feelings
so long ignored,
now have no meaning,
no meaning at all.
Those tangled feelings
so long ignored,
now have no meaning
no meaning at all.

Standing on the brink of despair
in a blaze of light I saw you there:
how well you answered that fateful call
but can anyone tell me the point of it all?

There I stood lost in the moment.
I should have saved you but I couldn’t.
How well I’ve paid for my foolish pride,
I lost it all when you left my side.

Those tangled feelings
so long ignored,
now have no meaning
no meaning at all.
Those twisted feelings
so long ignored,
now have no meaning,
no meaning at all.

i. that love song

Distant thunder
echo’s down
from dark
and sullen heights.
And the sound
plays along
the fringes
of the night.

Distant rumbles
signal
the coming
of another storm.
And the sound
makes me
wonder if
you’re safe and warm.
While the radio
plays on,
and keeps me moving
along.

I’m still trying to write
that love song.
Asking myself why
everything had to go wrong.
Knowing inside:
you were that love song.

Distant memories
live in
the reaches
of my mind.
And I wonder
about the past
I left
so far behind.

Distant yesterdays,
pieces of
a life I’ve
chosen to save.
Left to
wander along
surrealistic
pathways.
Lost among
the airwaves,
another song
I’ll never play.

I’m still trying to write
that love song.
Asking myself why
everything had to go wrong.
Knowing inside:
you were that love song.

ii. another dreamsong

I see your face
in the glare
of the streetlights.
I see the colors
of the passing
neon night.

I want to hold you
but those times are long gone.
As you walk on by,
another dreamsong.

Time is broken
by methods
of modern war.
I see the past
but don’t know
what we’re
fighting for.

I see your face
in the winds
of passing time.
I look to the future,
but I don’t like
the signs.

I want to hold you
but those times are long gone.
As you walk on by,
another dreamsong.

iii. the sum

Wonder of the age:
cast upon the muse of fate.
Book of Genesis:
proud and sensuous.

Ungainly student
of the promised land.
Unfortunate pilgrim
of a desperate plan.

Magik is your medium:
a suitable conundrum.
For the art is the form
and the dream is the sum.

Wonder of the age:
cast out and alienated.
Neurogenesis:
unholy denizen.

Magik is your medium:
a suitable conundrum.
For the art is the form
and the dream is the sum.

Ungainly student
of the promised land.
A makeshift prophet
of someone else’s plan.

Magik is your medium:
a suitable conundrum.
For the art is the form
and the dream is the sum.

One step where events converge may alter your perception.

i. possibilities

‘There will be time,’
someone once said to me.
‘You will be fine,
if that’s what you want to be.’

River run down to the sea.
Mighty mountain beckon to me.
A world of glorious blues and greens,
alive with possibilities.

Walking hand in hand
in a wild and majestic land.
No compromise to the truth:
never worry what you have to lose.
Walking side by side
knowing only that you’re alive.
No choosing sides like it was before:
neither shall we learn war anymore.

‘There will be time,’
someone once said to me.
‘It’s there to find
as any fool can see.’

Walking hand in hand
in a wild and majestic land.
No compromise to the truth:
never worry what you have to lose.
Walking side by side
knowing only that you’re alive.
No choosing sides like it was before:

ii. a song for all of us to sing

I stood and listened to the sirens
screaming through the night.
Wondering about the reasons
and if things will ever be all right.

Such a little thing, isn’t it?
in our mixed up world,
and we hear it all the time:
someone we don’t want to know
committing another crime.

In a flash
in a heartbeat,
weapons clash
music of the streets.
Stacatto bursts
of machine-gun fire.
Violence never sleeps
and never tires.

‘I have a dream,’
said Martin Luther King,
his life was a noble thing.
Another prince of peace
with a song for all of us to sing.

‘Make the journey,’
said Bobby Kennedy.
It’s a noble thing,
'the long, long road to peace':
another song for us to sing.

In a flash
in a heartbeat,
weapons clash
music of the streets.
Stacatto bursts
of machine-gun fire.
Violence never sleeps
and never tires.

I stood and listened to the children
and saw their need for love,
wondering about the reasons
our hands are stained with so much blood.

Seems such a little thing, doesn’t it?
in our mixed up world.
yeah we see it all the time:
another person we don’t want to know
the victim of another crime.

But I have a dream
and this one’s for you and me.
Yeah, I have a dream
and I think it’s a noble thing.
Yeah, I have a dream:
I saw this world of ours in peace.
Yeah, I have a dream:
a song for all of us to sing,
I saw this world of ours in peace.

iii. dreaming it all away

Caught in the squalor
of yet another storm,
riding the crest
of these jagged waves.
Heading for places
that I’ve never known:
closing my eyes on
another day.

Grip the wheel
with melancholy hands,
raise the sails
and set the course.
Navigate the waters
and search for distant lands.
To set my eyes
upon some other shore.

To dream once more.

Through uncharted waters
to find a new land,
and by the by
never come home again.
Heading for places
I long to know,
where dreamsongs
weave themselves
into the reaches
of the soul.
Closing my eyes
upon another day,
and by the by
never come home again.

Grip the wheel
with melancholy hands,
raise the sails
and set the course.
Navigate the waters
and search for distant lands.
To set my eyes
upon some other shore.

Caught in the squalor
of this mortal life,
living with the hope
that time will save.
Leaving all the things
I have come to know
closing my eyes on
another day.
Dreaming it all away.

“Woe to him that is alone when he falleth
for there is not another to help him up. -Ecclesiastes The Teacher, (circa 1000 B.C.E)

“And I gave my heart to seek and search out by
wisdom concerning all things that are done
under heaven: this sore travail hath God given
to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.” -Ecclesiastes The Teacher (circa 1000 B.C.E)

“What key unlocks the doors that lead
through the lonely wastelands of the soul?
What will fill all of the desires
that we have come to know?
Will our humanity push us over the edge:
what will it finally show?
For once in the light,
it is hard to understand
what brings on the night.” -The Lost Books of Kaladon, (circa 1995 A.D.)

"I've written this to keep from crying.
But I am crying, only the tears won't come." — Aleister Crowley, “Diary of a Drug Fiend” (circa 1922)
