Considering that Christmas was once a Pagan holiday called Sol Day...or something like that - and alot of the traditions or rites have nothing to do with Christ, I feel very compelled to celebrate it every year.
Historically, Constantine "created" Christmas to make Christianity more palatable for the Roman Pagans of his time. Looks like it worked.
I somewhat object to the term Christmas, but yes it can be celebrated sans JC.
Atheists/Agnostics - Do you still celebrate christmas?
Re: Atheists/Agnostics - Do you still celebrate christmas?
Who Knows wrote:This is something I'm struggling with right now - but to be honest - I love christmas - especially as a kid. Nothing beat that feeling christmas morning, checking under the tree to discover what some mysterious fat old man had brought you. I want my kids to experience that same feeling.
However, being agnostic, it seems like i'm sending the wrong 'signals' by celebrating christmas. (well, that, and my wife is still TBM, so of course we're celebrating christmas)
I'm just trying to make it more commercial i guess - just enjoy the season, the lights, the gifts, etc. - I figure I'm just trying to take the 'Christ' out of christmas - ha! - but still celebrate and enjoy it.
What do all the other agnostics/atheists do?
Even if you're agnostic, Christmas is a great time to spend time with your family. Christmas is for the kids, anyway, in my opinion. And I'm a big kid. I love all of the Christmas specials, the tree, the lights.
Don't worry about what "message" you're sending. Just enjoy the season and your family. You've got the right idea! ;)
