Doesn't a seer stone work similar to the liahona? You have to have immense faith before it will start working?

Oh Johnny, how long have you been around apologetics???
It's so simple...continuing revelation!

So, if the Lord reveals stuff to Gordon B. Hinckley today, do you suppose he would do it by email? Or would the Lord prove he's hip and send Gordon a text by phone?

Local in what sense? They were used everywhere the Mormons settled to my knowledge---even after Joseph Smith in Utah. In fact there was a rash of seer stonery around Parowan that apparently "got out of hand" at one point (people having too much of their own revelations, etc.).

That's why this is so interesting. I expected people to be a little cautious in opining about seer stones, but I never thought they'd completely dismiss them. How do you deal with the Book of Mormon translation and the revelations received by seer stone if these are worthless relics of a credulous age?

I don't know about immense but yeah, you need some. It's a tool, not an independently operating magic device.

A wizard did it.

Yes to that.
The seer stone Joseph used to finish translating the Book of Mormon is in the possession of the Church. The Urim and Thummim were taken back when Joseph let Martin Harris take the 166 pages and lost them.

That's my impression, as well. I take it you do not subscribe to the idea that seer stones are relics of a credulous and superstitious time.

And some pretty serious chemicals in the bloodstream, too.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
