Drugs and Revelations: an insiders view.

an Israeli researcher says Moses was high and just not on a high mountain.

I thought I read some place (maybe here) of Joseph Smith taking a mind altering substance.

One of my friends who I grew up with in the Church would always ask me if I wanted a drink of something and says when he drinks it he starts speaking in tongues - which always makes me laugh.

I posted this link a while ago, and I think it's quite compelling. Remember that in those days, the concept of mind altering drugs wasn't understood the same way we do now. Joseph clearly had some awareness of how hallucinogens can create unique spiritual experiences and visions, and I think Dr. Beckstead makes a good case that he might have administered drugs to his congregations at certain times to "build testimonies of his work."

There was a Discussion Thread over at on the MA&D Message Board about this topic, but it is now a close Thread. It just got recently closed down, by one of the Moderators, over there.
Here is the URL Address to that Discussion Thread:

After I started smoking the Ganj but before I left Mormonism, I made an interesting observation. I could get "the spirit" almost every time I smoked up and became introspective. Meditation helped bring it on in addition to writing in my notebooks or drawing.

I was just thinking about something like this yesterday. There is no doubt that due to circumstances I had no control over that I needed some heavy medication in youth - likely haldol and ritalin to deal with being nervous and hyper to the point I could not really focus on things. Maybe that's just being a teenager but it was psychologically brutal. I was thinking that weed could possible have helped me, to relax but since I have such an addictive personality it may have caused a nightmare too.Recently I asked a friend what weed was like - he said it makes you relaxed and you feel like you are smart. I do know from my old job that the weed today is nothing like they had in the 6o's. It's like ten times more powerful as I think it has a lot more THC in it now. Maybe the D&C should say use weed sparingly.

I find smoking weed to be very boring. I just giggle a bunch and then eat a bunch of crap with other people doing the same thing. If you're going to smoke get a bong. Anyway.....

Your friend said he thought it makes people feel smart? Well, I know from watching other people that are high (while I'm sober) I think they are anything but smart! ;)

Mercury, it's so odd for me when people that were LDS talk about feeling the "spirit" while they're high. My spiritual experiences almost never happened while I was on drugs. They always felt synthetic to me -- not "spiritual" in the way I felt outside of drug use. But, that may be that LDS think more about spiritual matters than I did when I was going through a few years of drug use. Dunno.

I don't know that it makes you feel smarter. It makes you think that every minute detail of anything is like some new discovery.

Did you ever see "Animal House"? Remember the scene where they're all high and Tom Hulce is talking about how the dust speck on his finger is like a tiny little universe?

That was a pretty accurately depicted scene.
