Are spirits stupid?

Post by _Tarski »

I always assumed that I needed my brain and its neurons to think and feel and reason. But spirits don't have brains. Or if they do then we have to ask what good do those physical neurons do? Surely they must help with thought. Well, we know they do! Brain surgery and brain lesions and so on makes that point--read Oliver Sachs. So a spirit brain (WTF?) can't think as well then I guess. Again, otherwise the physical brain isn't adding anything.

Spirits are, well, stupid. Fair conclusion?

I actually think you're onto something. But speak for yourself.

How do spirits think without neurons? And if they have neurons that think just fine then what good does a physical brain do? I am on to something. The notion of a ghost is bankrupt for numerous reasons. They also walk through walls but don't fall through the floor. And what are they wearing? Spirit cotton/polyester blend?

Maybe ectoplasm is the spirit embrionic fluid or after birth when a spirit is "procreated"?
I don't know. Consult your seer stone.

You commonly hear an apologist say that the brain is a transducer, essentially a medium through which the thoughts of the spirit are made accessible by the physical matter of the body in this world.

One problem with this is that scientists are learning more and more about how the actual thoughts that we think, the memories that we have, the decisions we make, etc. are actually formed, stored, and produced by the neural network of our physical brain tissue. What is it exactly that the spirit is doing if the actual thinking is being done by the cells of the brain, and the brain isn't just some kind of transmission device making the thoughts of a spirit accessible in the flesh?

Tarski hits one out of the park again, as usual. The whole concept of a spirit that thinks, attached to our physical bodies which are just the shell that our spirits control, is bankrupt. There's really nothing left for the spirit to do, once one has accounted for the part of it all that the brain is doing, physically, with its cells.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

I can't believe you said this. Even in jest. I'm floored. Speechless. I'll have to remember this day.

You know, that transducer theory seems pretty testable. Do the results of split brain patient experiments make sense if the brain just transmits the thoughts of the spirit? I assume the spirit isn't split too.
