I just put it up here to offend some people. So, you want to know why I did it? There. I want to offend people. :)
Congrats then. I was hoping you weren't naïve enough to expect no reaction.

I think so. Just remember back to last year when one or two of the posters said incredibly disparaging things about homosexuals.
You have a weird idea of what morality entails.

I'm not really sure how teaching someone to be more moral than everyone else is viewed as a bad thing. Can you really teach someone to be TOO moral??
Obviously, if someone tries to apply those morals to everyone else, or judges others for not being as moral as he/she is, then it's not good. But trying to become more moral yourself... I don't see the problem.
I think it should be - Reporting that you live the strict moral code during private interviews is something that keeps Mormons unique.
The title of your post is "In defense of the LDS Church." What, exactly, about the LDS church are you defending?
I must've missed it.
I'm saying I think people overestimate how ridiculous the Church is with respect to its moral panics and more broadly its antiquated hand wringing over harmless behavior by neglecting less obvious failings of their own cultural milieu. I'm defending the Church in the sense that I'm saying it is relatively better than it can be made out to be, mainly because human nature is worse. It's a thought that occurred to me after watching some nonsense about the threat of violent video games on a mainstream news source.

That's not what I'm talking about at all, and I would not regard LDS Church teachings as "more moral." A moral panic is something like the fear of rock n' roll in the 50's, or the fear over dungeons and dragons in early 80's, or the fear of an [insert favorite drug here] epidemic, etc. They often arise out of older generation's fear of things the younger generations are doing they lack experience with. One of the ways that the Church comes off as ridiculous is in having moral panics that seem antiquated and/or odd to contemporary society, such as its aforementioned attitude towards r-rated films.
