Jason Bourne wrote:I some places yes and some no. The poor can become well off at least in the US and other free nations. I believe in the American Dream. I think I am living it. I was barely middle class growing up and started married life with little. I have been fortunate in my career. I know dozens of others who could say the same. I have seen it in my business.

I also see those who have being quite generous for the most part.

I think you are basically wrong on this point.

I see things differently, I guess. I'm working on a project to impact the rural counties in 12 states for the next couple of years. That's 340+ rural counties. In those 340+, over 30% of the population is classified as either poverty stricken or the working poor. In almost 1 in 8 of those counties, the poor make up over 40% of the population, some of them up to 50%. So the Bell curve doesn't work for them. The poor make up a significant enough number in the populations in those counties that they are keeping the mortality rates artificially high for all 12 states and no matter how much money I raise, no matter how many patient programs I throw at them, the mortality numbers remain high because there are so many poor among us. (and the risk factors for my particular concern are manifested more often, at higher rates, and with less success in irradicating them in the poor).

So... in my view, even in the US, the poor stay poor. The upper tier of the lower class may make it to the lowest rung of the middle class, there may be some shuffling in the middle class, but the poor... 40% of a significant number of my counties... remain poor. That kind of weight on a nation's economy cannot be overlooked. We have to do something about them, or what TD calls a "better world" will not only not be possible for them, but will likely not be possible for anyone but the very rich.

Someone once asked me what I would do, if I was a terrorist. How would I bring the US economy to its knees? It's not hard to figure out. There's more than one way to bring the US economy to its knees. We've managed to do that, with uncontrolled greed both at the corporate level and in our citizenry. Another way would be to take a significant state off the power grid. Without power (electrical, wind, coal, gas, etc), this country doesn't function. Where would a terrorist place a bomb that would take out a significant state? You guess. All it would take is one bomb, and it wouldn't really have to be a big bomb. Hit one place, one very small place, and California, with 1/8 of the GNP of the country, shuts down... goes off the grid. A lot of other places also go off the grid, but California is the biggest one. Take that big of a hit, and the economy hits the skids.

We live on the precipice of ruin all the time. We aren't careful with our resources, we waste a lot more than is necessary or prudent, we foul our own backyards and everyone else's too, and we don't invest in our future. We're so intent on living it up on borrowed money for today, we have brought nearly if not all of the entire planet to its knees with our greed.

The earth still looks the same, from space.

And this has what to do with what?

That's God's view.

This is simply a myth. A few, yes. A few extremely bright youth who were unlucky enough to be born poor. But for the vast majority of the poor, this is simply beyond their capacity. Do you really not see what is real, Jason?

Harmony,

Wealth transfers up. Those who have wealth obtain greater wealth from those are poorer. Consider loans given for houses or cars. Those who have wealth charge interest to those who lack wealth to purchase what the need or want. Credit card companies charge exorbitant rates for those who don’t pay in full their credit card bill.

On the other hand, if you can write a check for a car (or several cars), you likely get an even better deal on the price and you pay no interest. Wealth transfers up.

Business people get large deductions and some business people apply expenses to their private homes as well as to their business and take the deductions. Getting caught at that is most unlikely, unless, they do something so blatantly obvious that a tax return is singled out.

There are many other examples, Harmony, which I’m sure you can recognize. Consider the bail-out of AIG and American banks, the auto industry, etc. Those at the top still are taking in tens of millions of dollars even as their companies are pleading for government help. Wealth transfers up.

I don't dispute that at all, JAK. It's no mystery to me why the poor get poorer as the rich get richer. I'm just trying to put a brake on them dying at significantly higher rates.

I'm glad someone has something to brighten the day. I'm reduced to drinking diet caffiene free Dr Pepper. And I ran out of toilet paper. And if the world was really getting better, it would be spring already!

truth dancer wrote:Lately, I hear a lot about the last days and that the signs of the times are upon us. OK, so yes we are facing a pretty terrible time in many respects; global warming is a serious problem, the economic crisis is HUGE, mass extinction is unprecedented, wars continue, starvation is rampant, and we have many new challenges that are unique to our time.

Yep, these are bad.

OTOH, compared to the history of humankind, I think now is about as good as it has ever been in many respects.

In some ways, yes.

I'm sure fewer people die in war today than ever, the laws protecting women and the opportunities afforded women are better than ever in the history of the world, (not that there isn't a long way to go) children are being recognized as something other than slaves in much of the world, as we recognize the billion members of our human family do not have clean drinking water, my guess is that the percentage of humans having food and water is greater than at any other time. The resources for the disabled are better today then ever before in some parts of the world, slavery is winding down after six thousand years, and some people care about animals and the Earth more than at any other time (generally speaking).

I disagree about wars. We've had some horrific wars in the last century and the 20th century's biggest violent death killer was repressive regimes. Women do have more rights and opportunities but I worry that there is a sword being driven between the genders, not because of the laws but because of extremists on both sides. Men and women's darker natures seem to be exalted and normalized. I can't argue about laws protecting children but I'm worried that the increase in reported child abuse isn't just due to our being more vigilant. I like my drinking water so we agree there. Less sure about everyone eating. Help for disabled a plus and slavery vanishing is good but I'm worried about the increase in human trafficking for the sex trade. Scary.

So, what do you think? Is the world worse than ever? Better than ever? About the same? Are the problems we face more serious? Just part of the evolution of humankind?

World is trucking along. It's the best of times and the worst of times. I think technology and our changing social and political systems create a lot of good but also open the door to a lot of bad. The invention of new weapons means a lot of situations are a lot more serious. During the days of tribalism if you had a crazy chief he couldn't wage war on the scale we can. I also worry about weapons right around the corner. We're probably only a few years from bioweapons that can target racial characteristics. Imagine if terrorists or a new racial supremacist with a nation behind him had a weapon like that. Scary stuff.

I freakin' LOVE the Last Days. We have it reeeeeally good. Love it.

Some good stuff:

1) CGI. How cool is CGI? I just took my kid to see Monsters Vs. Aliens and we watched a silly movie with spectacular animation with 3D glasses. Oh, and we had Dr. Pepper and Reese's Pieces. I mean. C'mon. Even "poor" people can see cool movies and eat Reese's Pieces and drink Dr. Pepper. So. There you go. CGI, Dr. Pepper, and Reese's Pieces.

2) Air conditioning and refrigeration. Oh, yeeeeeah. Even "poor" people get that crap.

3) The Internetz. Thank god for Algore. "Poor" people get the Internetz, too.

4) Oil exploitation gave me plane rides, gets me cheap crap, and allows me to drive a really cool sports car. I love oil exploitation. "Poor" people benefit from oil exploitation by living in WalMart and driving crappy mini-vans. They're lucky to be so "poor"!

5) Pr0n. What a godsend. "Poor" people get PrOn. I don't know how I feel about that.

6) Cheap housing that isn't made of adobe. I have a really cute house with a big yard that I fill with cool plants that I picked up from huge corporate distributors that got their stuff via oil exploitation. God, human innovation is awesome. There are a bunch of "poor" people that live around here who don't get wet and cold at night because they live in affordable and plentiful housing. Man. Being "poor" SUCKS!

7) Medicine. Loves me some cheap medicine. Loves me the expensive stuff, too. We have the best medicine ever. "Poor" people have access to lots of cheap medicine, and in fact, get the expensive stuff, too. They don't even have to pay for it! We let the Chinese pay for it, and then pass the bill to our children's children's children. Loves me some debt-financing!!

8) Fast f**king food. Who doesn't love a good hamburger made from cheap crap delivered to you via oil exploitation? I do! Love it. And you know what? Fat f**king "poor" people can eat the crap out of fast food.

So. That's about it for good stuff.

Hrm. Bad stuff.

1) Muslims. They want to take everything cool away, and when they're done doing that they end up turning on each other.

2) Obama's budget.

3) Bailing out assholes. From the "poor" asshole who sits on her asshole all day in gubment houzin' to the rich assholes who run their business into the ground and then ask us for money to bail them out and then proceed to pay themselves millions in bonuses because "It's in the contract."

4) Totalitarians who can't tolerate free speech or economic freedoms. Take away a man's right to speak, and usurp his economic power through heavy-handed taxation and you've just created a slave.

Hrm... Oh...

5) And too many babies being born to lazy assholes, who in turn, make more lazy assholes. That crap is going to lead to war when resources run scarce. That's a historical f**kin' fact.
You can’t trust adults to tell you the truth.

It is not a myth. Not at all. It is truth. There are abundant community colleges that are very affordable. Financial aid and loans are available to almost anyone, especially the poor. I have had plenty dealing with the poor. Many choose not to try to get out of the situation they are in. You yourself complained on another thread how so many won't take jobs that end up going to illegals. Which is Harmony? I also spend a lot of time in a rural area. My county is one of the poorest in our area. There is a major metro area 20 miles from where I live that has an area code. Those in that code refer to the code I live in in a joking but disparaging way that implies people who live here are poor and red necks. But for the most part our poor still live in more comfort than much of the world. Few go with out food and shelter. Most have a car, TV, etc.

And yes, they can go to school and they can improve and they can work they way out of their situation. Many do. Many don't. Some won't. Are you poor? You have shared a lot about your family. Seems like your kids have worked hard to better their life. Are they poor?
