Grease

Post by _KimberlyAnn »

I love Grease the musical and Grease the movie, as well. I'm watching the movie along with my girls as I type. :)

I didn't see the movie when it came out in 1978. I was too young, but my mother let me watch it in the fifth grade. I'll never forget how big I felt. After I saw the movie, I was enamored with Olivia Newton John. I wanted to be her. I had a little diary in which I'd write how I wanted to be just like her when I grew up and that I wanted blonde hair and a black leather suit after I graduated from high school. I think it was a Hello Kitty diary. I drew lots of hearts in it, too, containing my initials along with the initials of whatever little boy I liked at the time. What a goof. My name was scrawled on nearly every page with a new last name.

"Kimberly Ann Dodd"

"Kimberly Ann Winnett"

"Kimberly Ann Bolding"

I still love the songs from that musical. I saw the play here in Tulsa and I was able to meet Frankie Valley at a cast party. I'd donated some money to the Performing Arts Center and so I got backstage along with my good friend, Pam. We had a BLAST! We took photos with Frankie but they've unfortunately disappeared.

Just a few minutes ago, I heard Grease Lightning. What a fun song, but the lyrics, well, they're racy!

Why this car is automatic
It's systematic
It's hydromatic
Why it's a grease lightning (Grease lightning)

We'll get some overhead lifters and four barrel quads
oh yeah
(Keep talking whoa keep talking)
Fuel injection cutoffs and chrome plated rods oh yeah
(I'll get her ready, I'll kill to get her ready)
With the four speed on the floor they'll be waiting at the door
You know that ain't no crap we'll be getting lots of tit
In Grease Lightning
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go

Go grease lightning you're burning up the quarter mile
(Grease lightning go grease lightning)
Go grease lightning you're coasting through the heat lap trial
(Grease lightning go grease lightning)
You are supreme the chicks'll cream for grease lightning
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go

We'll get some purple hued tailpipes and some thirty inch fins
oh yeah
We'll pound 'em in the dashboard and duel muffler twins
oh yeah
With new pistons, plugs and shocks I can get off my rocks
You know that I ain't bragging she's a real pussy wagon
Grease lightning

Go grease lightning you're burning up the quarter mile
(Grease lightning go grease lightning)
Go grease lighting you're coasting through the heat lap trial
(Grease lightning go grease lightning)
You are supreme the chicks'll cream for grease lightning

Go grease lightning you're burning up the quarter mile
(Grease lightning go grease lightning)
Go grease lighting you're coasting through the heat lap trial
(Grease lightning go grease lightning)
You are supreme the chicks'll cream for grease lightning
Lightning, lightning, lightning
Lightning, lightning, lightning
Lightning

I just cannot help but feel good while watching Grease. I think I'll add the soundtrack to my iPod!

I know what you mean Kim.

I used to enjoy watching it when I was younger. For some reason I don't think the adults around me paid much attention o the film. But when I got older and watched it with "new eyes" I couldn't believe how vulgar a film it was, especially the song you mentioned.

Why do you think it was that our parents didn't see the film for what it was?

I think a lot of it is the fact that it's a musical. It's surprising what you can get away with in a musical.

Take a look at West Side Story. There are some very adult themes in that show. It's definitely a PG-13 show. It has pre-marital sex, rape, and gang violence.

But the music is beautiful, and it is one of the greatest musicals of all-time!

by the way, I LOVE Grease.

I own two copies of the DVD. LOL

I never could make it through 5 min of West Side Story.

I always found it grating.

Grease is the word.

I agree that both Grease and WSS have some disturbing content that is easily missed, although my older sister still tells the story of my mom taking her and some friends for a 1st grader birthday party and just feeling sick at how bad the movie was.

I love many scenes in WSS, but the rape scene at the end makes me sick everytime I see it. Which is probably the point, but still... Whenever I watch it at home, I skip some of the songs and scenes; I've only seen it once from start to finish (and that was in a theater).

Apparently the on stage versions are far more raunchy (I need to see this play Bond says to himself). That bit in the "Grease Lightning" song where Travolta rubs clear plastic wrap on his groin area is apparently an homage to the play version where they talk about using that stuff like a condom. Travolta appeared in the stage production and did it to keep some of the raunchiness in the film that was in the play (or so he said in a documentary I saw on the movie back in '98, the twenty year reunion I guess.)

Edit: I just read the lyrics close and there's alot of dirty stuff in there! Didn't catch most of it when viewing the movie lol. Of course I'm all for innuendo so go Grease Lightning.
