There is some serious disconnect going on with some Mormons and their actions. :/
I remember that. Do we know what happened to that family?
You have shared this story with me before and it lurches at my soul every time I hear it.
That bishop should be ashamed of himself.
I am so sorry that your family went through that. It is embarrassing that they associated themselves with the Church.
Had I been in your Mom's ward, I would have told that bishop to go to hell, and helped her anyway!
When my daughter had kidney surgery, our ward acted like Fence Sitters ward did. They sent toys and presents to the hospital for my daughter. They offered to spell me from sitting with her, and brought enough food to last us for several weeks.

Not really, no. They received some Christmas presents, but after the New Year, as is custom with Internet stories, they dropped off the radar.

In the face of madness, rationality has no power - Xiao Wang, US historiographer, 2287 AD.
Every record...falsified, every book rewritten...every statue...has been renamed or torn down, every date...altered...the process is continuing...minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Ideology is always right.

My wife and our five boys were all active at this time. She paid tithing on her wages. My oldest boy was on his mission at the time of the accident. While I did not attend Sunday services except occasionally, I was involved in any other church activity that included my sons and wife. I coached the YM ward basketball teams every year for 10-12 years, I was a scoutmaster for years, I went to the yearly father and son activities, I participated on the adult men's basketball team and attend numerous church socials and activities. I guess you could say I was about as active as a non tithe paying, Sunday service avoiding church member could be. I am sure a lot of the ward members reactions were due to my wife being the person she is. I also believe there are/were a lot of people in that ward (we have since moved) who would react the way they did regardless of who was in need.
I do not discount Runtu's story at all. I have had minor issues with Church leadership and regular members alike. When my oldest son was on his mission in South America he suffered a leg injury. Initially the details of the injury were sketchy and we were concerned about him. I asked the stake president for the phone number of the Doctor treating him so I could call and talk to him to get better information. I knew the sake president had this number. I was told that calls to missionaries were not allowed. I repeated my request, emphasizing that I only wanted to speak to his doctor, and once again I was told that calls to missionaries were not allowed. I left him with the understanding that with or without his help I would be calling the doctor.

Didn't you organize some type of fund for them? Or get the place that presents could be sent? I remember something along that line. It was a really nice thing to do.
