Are swimsuits banned on campus, too? I mean, do they have a pool and are people allowed to wear swimsuits in it?

Maybe they should outlaw spandex of any quantity (most clothing items have at least a little bit these days) and outlaw premade clothing. Make everyone sew their own. They could use scripture to back it up.

D&C 42:40 And again, thou shalt not be proud in thy heart; let all thy garments be plain, and their beauty the beauty of the work of thine own hands;

I actually support this. Dress codes bring a certain discipline on college campuses that is often lacking.

What purpose does that sort of discipline serve?

They have a dress code. The stupid dress code they have is one reason I decided (a million years ago) I would not attend there. It was even more strict than BYU (back when it was called Ricks).

Actually, there was one item on the code that I had issue with. It was basically that all clothing must be gender appropriate. I was known to wear men's white dress shirts and a men's suit, at the time.

Here is the current code: http://www.byui.edu/studenthonor/Baseline.htm

OH! It looks like they still have the gender rule:

◦Gender based dressing (i.e., men wearing women style jeans)

Attention to detail it takes to make sure your haircut is appropriate, that you are clean shaven, and that your attire is within the lines of the given standard, make for a more disciplined person. When a person is disciplined in the small things in life, they tend to have a better handle on the bigger issues, such as homework and doing the required readings for class.

I guess the dress code doesn’t bother me because of my military background, where I learned to appreciate the wisdom behind high standards of dress during garrison.

Sounds like a load of twallop to me. What relationship is there between dress habits and study habits? I don't know too many academics who wear a uniform.

You misunderstand. It's not a dress habit, the point of a dress code isn't to teach students how to dress for the rest of their lives, it's to teach attention to detail and awareness. You can predict with pretty good regularity how well a soldier will perform in the field based on their performance in garrison. Making sure a ribbon is 1/8th of an inch above a pocket seam doesn’t mean that person will become a better marksmen, but the person who bothers to bust out the ruler and measure out that 1/8th inch because they are aware of the standard helps set a personal habit that translates into other areas, such as remembering and applying the basic fundamentals of marksmanship. The reason militaries around the world enforce all the stupid garrison games is because it works. Learning to march, drill and parade around serves to that end.

Ask some of the professors around here who the better students are. Common answer is Ex-cons and vets. Ask them about some of the habits good students tend to have, like bringing your text to class. There is no direct cause and correlation to the fact that because someone merely forgets to put their text in their backpack means they suck as a student, but students who consistently bring their text show that attention to detail, that discipline that is required to do well in school.

I don't know too many academics who wear a uniform.

Oh Christ.

I guess I'll just chalk this up to military indoctrination. But that sort of thing has no place in education. The military is great at getting people to obey orders. Not so great at teaching critical thinking.
