Re: Romney Falls to Gingrich in SC
I really hope that Romney wins both the nomination and the presidency. It would be so interesting to see the attention it would bring to the LDS church. If we think we took a beating in the media because of prop 8 wait until we have a presidential nominee or president. Regardless of whether you are critic or TBM you would have to look forward to the attention.

I don't have a problem if Romney becomes President. His religion doesn't make much difference as long as he keeps it in the chapel.

I still think that Mitt Romney is going to get the GOP Nomination for President. Mitt Romney is the only GOP Candidate for President that has a legitimate chance of defeated President Barack Obama come November. If Newt Gingrich gets the GOP Nomination for President, there is essentially no way that he can defeat President Barack Obama come November.

Re: Romney Falls to Gingrich in SC
I think there are two big indicators that Romney may have lost the nomination today.
First, with the win by Gingrich, Santorum has to be thinking he's done even with a Iowa win. I can't imagine that the Republican machine will want a four-way race much longer. And most if not all of Santorum's votes will go to Gingrich. This suggests that had Santorum not been in the race today, Newt could have won a clean majority of the state.
So, second and more importantly, this would have put Newt closer to the percentage number of Reagan in '80 and Bush in 2000 - both going on to win the general election. As it stands now, if Newt ends up in the low 40's percentage wise, he'll be more like losing Republican candidates in the general election like McCain and Dole who won the state but lacked the broad appeal to a majority of voters that carried through to November. I have to think someone at the national level is thinking this through and making phone calls.
Either way, this is very bad news for Romney.

I agree and think he would keep his religion private, just like our founding fathers intended. He has shown in the past his is willing to go against TBM beliefs when it comes to legislation. I like him more than Obama. I also look forward to two things if he is elected.
Mormonism will take the center stage as far as media attention goes. It will be very interesting to see how it holds up under that microscope.
Secondly I also don't think the office of the president has that great of an influence on the direction of the government and the state of the nation in general. Putting him in office might shut up some of those people who tend to blame the current office holder for our country's ills. He isn't going to be able to do much more than the past presidents.

H.
The Republicans (and/or the Democrats if they don't have an eligible incumbent) hold 50 mini elections to take delegates in an attempt to gain the ability to run for the Presidency proper. A Republican needs 1,100+ delegates. Romney has gained approximately 30. This is mini election #3. So it might take a while.
Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07

Two things, LDST. SC has 25 delegates up for grabs (half of what they should have due to penalties caused by moving the primary up) which go primarily to the winner. New Hampshire's delegates are proportionately distributed so even with a big win by Romney there (40% more or less) he only won 7 delegates.
Second thing - conventional wisdom is that South Carolina better reflects the majority of republicans and the nation as a whole. Since Reagan the winner in SC has gone on to win the nomination.

The interesting thing about the Loss is that just one week ago all the main stream media outlets we calling Romney unstoppable. They had all but call the GOP race for candidacy done and Romney the winner. Now its oops, we meant Newt not Romney.

Yeah, TMB, that was a big Perry-esque "oops" on their part. I'm not sure why anyone would think that, given the proclivity of SC for a conservative, and generally evangelical candidate. Huckabee outperformed Romney in '08 by a solid margin and even though McCain won then he didn't exactly sweep the state even with much broader recognition and a war hero record in a big military state.

So I'm not used to the mentality of US voters, nor the exposure they are subject to when it comes to propaganda for political reasons.
But how does Gingrinch gain something like 30% points in a matter of days? Are that many Americans who take the time to vote that fickle? I've always found, locally, that people who take part in a sort of optional low consequence vote usually keep somewhat informed views.
How do they overturn Iowa voting results 2 weeks later (on the night of another primary, no less) and declare a new winner? http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/01/2 ... fficially/
Does this coincide with the evangelicals meeting in texas to find a 'romney block'? http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ ... ory_1.html
