I go by the manual. The manual has a different definition of perfection than one may think. The point is: we all knew that only Christ could be perfect. It was in striving to be perfect and not in attaining it. Also, we all knew about the atonement and the forgiveness of sins. No one could ever be sinless on this earth. Just me had a wrong view of perfection and she suffered accordingly. But whose fault is that? Read the lesson manual and become enlightened:

Many people find the commandment “be ye perfect” to be overwhelming. Youth especially can get discouraged easily when they make mistakes. They may feel that perfection is unattainable and thus not worth working toward. We all need to realize that perfection in this life is not expected or even possible. What is expected is that we try each day to be better than we were the day before. Help class members understand that they will someday reach perfection if they strive for it as best they can from day to day.

Remind class members that while perfection cannot be entirely achieved in this life, we can make great progress toward it. The Lord expects us to do all we can toward giving up our sins and becoming perfect, and he has given us the gospel to help us do this.

I go by what an apostle said in General Conference in a talk that the manual quotes, rather than cherry-picking what I caricature I want to give the Church.

Of course, this is what happens when you tell rule-followers and perfectionists things like this. Are we really surprised that certain personality types take this stuff seriously?

I'm not.

We cannot blame the church for certain personality types. Perfectionists also have a tough time at work as they strive to be perfect. It is also a problem in the home as the perfectionist expect perfection in the home: dishes washed, dusting, vacuuming etc. Perfectionists tend to be clean freaks like felix unger. Such are the way perfectionists are.

And there is your mistake. The manual makes it clear what perfection is. The apostle may talk perfection but the manual explains it. See the point?

Yes, I see the point: you and the Correlation Committee are quote mining Russell M. Nelson and equivocating on what is meant by "perfection" (mortal or eternal).

No, Why Me, it is not a mistake to say that a lesson manual supersedes what an apostle says in General Conference. It is the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve that decide what lesson manuals say, not vice-versa.

It was teachings like this that kept me from being born again until I let go of LDSism and just went by the New Testament. Reading the New Testament was what allowed me to finally feel accepted and that it was okay and I was okay. I was able to actually feel like the Atonement covered me.

(then I realized I actually, ACTUALLY was okay without a god-man being slaughtered for me)

An aside here. I noticed that you have a new avatar.

Outstanding. I'm happy to see you went with South Park, but given your posting style and content, wouldn't this one be more appropriate?

Yeah I know what you mean.

The only problem was that Santa was objectively observable as being your parents and you only got stuff from him.

My God is not objectively observable and gives me a lot more than "stuff".

Russell M. Nelson, from the talk quoted in the manual:

Our understanding of perfection might be aided if we classify it into two categories. The first could pertain uniquely to this life—mortal perfection. The second category could pertain uniquely to the next life—immortal or eternal perfection.
