In Capitalist America there are winners by necessity but there are also loser by necessity. It is impossible for everyone to be wealthy. It just can't happen. To be wealthy means you need a poorer class to produce the goods and services that make you wealthy.
I don't know anyone who denies this. The difference being that there isn't a permanent poorer class - all other things being equal. Which they're not, of course.
bcspace also seems to think Mitt Romney wasn't privileged. He was raised as the son of a former Presidential candidate, and he had an easy ride all the way through college, riding on the coattails of his family's name and its money. His own wife said that neither of them worked while in school. He also made frequent flights back and forth from Stanford to Michigan to visit his girlfriend at that time.
That's what BC thinks. I couldn't care less how Mitt was raised, how often he visited his girlfriend, or anything else about he was raised. Why do you care?
Mitt Romney is a product of his own hard work, but not only his hard work. Most people work much harder than Mitt, but do not enjoy the advantages that he had growing up as a rich kid.
Yes. So what? What do you propose?
To say everyone has the "opportunity" to be like Mitt is just misleading.
True. But who is saying that?
Sure, technically the opportunity is there, but then again everyone in Russia has that same "opportunity."
But the framework doesn't lend itself to that achievement.
You think there aren't billionaires in Nigeria or Saudi Arabia? Same in Brasil. Brasil's president Lula came from the slums and never went to school.
Of course there are. So what?
But to suggest that everyone has the same "opportunity" in America to be wealthy is just ridiculous. We all have the same opportunity to try, but that is no different than any other country.
Now your changing the rules. Not many have the same opporunity to be like Mitt, but everyone has the same opportunity to be wealthy.
But we don't all have an equal chance, which is really what the Right Wingers are trying to imply.
Yes, you know them quite well. That's exactly what they mean - it's those pesky code words they always use that only you lefties seem to understand.
But in the real world, that's not what right wingers think at all. Who has claimed this? Of course we all don't have an equal chance. That's is silly on its face and even sillier to claim that's what they believe.
The fact is people are born differently, with varying degrees of interests, intelligence, talents, etc. To say we could all be millionaires if we really wanted is just a myth.
It is indeed. Why don't you take your criticism to those who make this claim.
It is the kind of thinking that drives Right wing bigotry,
Ah yes. When you can engage their arguments, call them bigots. Standard fare.
and they use it to justify their intolerance of the poor and suffering.
What does this even mean?
They call them lazy and useless, etc., because in their worldview, they could all be "just like Mitt" ... if they really wanted. Right?
So your position is that right wingers call the poor and suffering lasy and useless? Do I have this right?
Why so much anger? And why do you need to be so spectacularly wrong?
