Just say no. The church doesn't own you. And it doesn't deserve to.

Your wife has posted here before, right? I'm not sure I understand what's going on - is she pressuring you to go back to the church?
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

brade wrote:...There's a lot about the religion that I'm fond of. I think that in many ways Mormonism could offer a nice spiritual scaffolding as a sort of praxis, or spiritual way of life. The problem is that I can't participate in the Mormon way of life in the way I'd like unless I assent to certain beliefs. There's a very serious emphasis on orthodoxy, and if you don't adhere to the right dogma, then you can't fully participate in the Mormon praxis...I'm just saying, that's why I don't participate, because, if I'm honest, then I can't participate in the ways I'd like - the ways most spiritually useful to me.

I hear you Brade. I have no urgent desire to "return," but I still find the things you mention frustrating. Still, it is my history and my background, and I am damned well going to participate in it in the fashion I feel most useful and ethical: through my scholarly work. So, I don't care what any fundapolgist says, I am still a Mormon: whether I attend, whether I could pass a TR, whether or not I'm still listed on the rolls, even whether I believe in god or not. I'd even venture to say I'm a better Mormon than most self-righteous Mormons; my appreciation and critique both come from a desire to honor what is best in all of Mormonism's history and not from a thoughtless and pharisaic worship of obedience.

I am also confused.

Zee, you say that you feel better not going. That would indicate to me that it is better for you to stay out of Church rather than in.

If it is your wife having second thoughts, why is she having them? Does it have to do with outside family pressure, or does it have to do with mixed feelings from a belief standpoint?

I am not trying to get you betray a confidence, but since you seem to want help, I don't think I can give any kind of constructive advice unless I know what is going on.

1. Redesigning the temple garment
2. Praying to female gods
3. Making your own religious text
4. Exploring Greek mythology as a system of belief

I mean, not exactly LDS material, right? Do you share this world with her? And how does she ask you to stop "believing" these things?

Answers:
1. I never asked but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who believes I will present my portfolio to COB.
2. She is okay with this
3. Chalked up to silliness
4. Not very interested

To your last question: She doesn't ask me to stop believing.

Ceeboo,

Let's go to Mass together sometime.

Sethbag and Liz,

It makes sense that you are confused since I haven't told the whole story. Posting in a public forum is a bad way to get therapy, I suppose. I'm just letting words fly. For some reason, that helps.

I attended xmas mass last December.

I found it strange and boring at the same time.

Normal people coming in and dabbing water on their foreheads...

Genuflection before they entered the pews was odd as well.

I would prefer a burger joint, but Mass would be OK too! (Really would love to meet and share a few smiles with the in real life Zee)

Peace,

Pray to a loving God and take with you to Church your own best ideals. There is much to be said in group worship and you need not take part in any group insanity.
