In the real world, I'd say life in prison without parole for both, since you can't undo a wrongful death sentence.

And 18 year olds dating 16 year olds wouldn't count as molestation. 40 year olds dating 16 year olds would, though.

Do you tend to see other things in stark black/white terms, or is it just this one emotional issue? None of those messy shades of grey here.

I am especially impressed by the magical twelfth birthday, and how a single day would make the difference between life and death. I assume there must another magical birthday (18?) which would change life without parole into no crime at all. Awesome.

This is pretty much my only black and white issue. And yes, it's very much emotionally fueled. Not even by personal experience - I was never molested.

I'd be happy to pull the trap door on any child molester and let them swing in the breeze - if only I could be completely sure they were guilty. The world is a better place without them in it.

I confess to my hedonistic enjoyment of watching the video (cell phone taken by a U.S. soldier) while it was briefly on the internet on 12/31/2006 that showed the day before the trap door dropping under Saddam Hussein, the rope snapping as he hit the end, and his body wriggling in the moments before he was snuffed out. Sorry, but I think he deserved it for the mass killings and torture he ordered on Iraqis, deterrent or not.

I haven't watched that, but I tend to feel differently about mass murderers whose guilt could not possibly be disputed.

I realize that punishment doesn't have a a deterrent effect. The death penalty is for people like me who enjoy watching bad guys die. Maybe I've watched too many action movies, LOL. IN reality, the death penalty is for the really, really bad guys. An 18 year old kid who has sex with his 17 year old girlfriend isn't going to be sentenced to death.

The interesting thing about the kinds of draconian punishments like those you propose is that the end result would be much fewer molestations reported. Most abuse is committed by family members, and verrrry few victims would be happy with their relative being killed or put in prison for life. They would hide and keep secret all but the very worst cases of abuse.

That's a relief--for the teenagers too, I'm sure.

Hang 'em in the town square at high noon.

Some people like Anders Behring Breivik just need killin'.
