I think Greg Smith will lie lower, keeping himself to FAIR-only activities for 18 months to 2 years, and then emerge as the new polemic lightning rod of Mormon apologetics. He has that giddiness, and a bit of the old time sneer in his condescension.

Wow. This is fascinating.

One of Dan's threats to Bradford is to stop wooing PLC members to donate to the Maxwell Institute. I've attended PLC meetings and noted Dan's presence there. Whenever I saw him at those meetings, he was sitting at an empty table by himself. Granted I didn't watch him the entire time, but when I did, it seemed like he didn't care. He just wasn't engaged with potential donors like the other college deans and representatives. Dan may be an effective fundraiser, but I certainly couldn't tell from watching him.

As an aside, I really think this change is for the better. The Maxwell Institute was just unproductive polemics. A new direction would be very welcome.

What does this say about Dan's sense of self importance and arrogance? For him, the Maxwell Institute was about Dan Peterson. It is nothing without him. He couldn't just be nice about this and give best wishes to the guy replacing him.

Sorry about the late response to this, but I was at the Mormon Stories conference yesterday, and no one mentioned it at all. As someone already posted, John Dehlin did link this thread on his Facebook page (that's how I found it) but that was after the conference was over.

I don't think so. Few can match Dr. Peterson's personal charisma and ability to write. You may not like him but he has been the true driving force behind Mormon apologetics. Love him or loathe him, there is nobody who will fill his shoes on the horizon.

It isn't going to be Greg Smith.

Don't even get me started on the Explanations of Facsimile No. 3! Where is Dan Peterson, that dirty rat!? Has he anything to say about the Explanations of Facsimile No. 3 before he sinks?

How much do doners have to pay in order to get real answers? For Christ's sake, their apologetics stinks! Fire them all!

Very true. And, there are lots of ways to do apologetics. FARMS was not always part of BYU.
