The Church simply sent a letter to a Ward of the Church indicating it's desires to improve the MTC which would in fact improve Missionary Training, and they indicated that they would appreciate support from the membership in that endeavor.

There is nothing "cult-like" or sinister here.....

Sad you all are. :(

Hmmm swore I read the stake pres called the chair in and "invited" him to sustain the Q12 in their desire to proceed with the building. Of course anyone reading between the lines here ("or else") would be purely anti-mormon thought right?

I also understood from my reading of the article that this was followed up with a letter being read to the congregation (i.e. the petition signers of the stake getting their views blocked and property values diminished) also “inviting” them to also follow the council of the q12. Once again more reading between the lines would be unjust right?

Hey this is such an awesome statement! I've never seen this used before. It's so original that you should think of trademarking this phrase before other apologists steal it from you.

The reality is the majority of residents in this neighborhood work for BYU or the church in some other way. There opposition may not have ended in church discipline but it sure would have affected their employment or lack there of.

You've been banking at ABC Bank for 30 years. Until this morning, you had several thousand dollars in your account.

But this morning, you've found that your account is nearly empty. The teller explained with obvious discomfort that the bank isn't doing so well, and a lot of their investments have gone bad. There's almost no money available today and no chance there'll be any more available tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after. You withdraw the few dollars left in your account and stuff them in your pocket. You ask the teller to close your account.

As you walk to the exit, you see your grandmother, your kid sister's husband and a friend from work all standing in the teller line. Each is holding a paycheck and are obviously intent on making a deposit.

According to you, the proper thing to do is to simply walk by and say nothing to these people.

After all, you've left the bank... why not leave it alone? Right?

So, eventually, they find all of the discussion boards with "Mormon" in it to continue the venting. The presses spreading hate and liable[sic] were alive and well in Illinois/Missouri in Joseph Smith's day and I guess they continue today online.

I challenge you to point out ONE LIE published in the first and last issue of the Nauvoo Expositor.

businessman05 wrote:It is interesting how the Mormon haters find any issue to attack. "The Mormons build a tall building and convince the neighborhood to go along with it, therefore, they are a cult". "The Mormons have commandments and people actually keep them, they must be a cult!" "The Mormons believe in direct Revelation from God through a Prophet and a Council of the Twelve, just like Warren Jeffs." If President Monson were to make his people break the laws of the country and force children to marry old men, then he would be excommunicated and arrested. Warren Jeffs was arrested but not excommunicated. Wait, Mormon hating bigots actually believe President Monson does that stuff anyway, my bad.

When hate becomes so strong due to some personal affront with the LDS Church that pride cannot overcome, irrationality creeps in. Every move, every position, every declaration by the Mormon leadership has nefarious motives. It is okay, we dealt with it when our ancestors were forced from Missouri and Illinois we can deal with it verbally and in written form now.

Latter-Day Saints left their homes in Nauvoo by Faith, they can deal with a tall building in their neighborhood. Anything said in these comments will not affect the faith of millions. I guess those who don't understand might continue to rage but then their lives are filled with anger so go figure.

Fact: the church promised homeowners neighboring thr MTC that the buildings would not exceed a certain height.

Fact: The church disregarded their promise on height and proposed a building twice as high.

Fact: When community members complained, the church told them it was a secular issue and that members were welcome to pursue their complaints via the proper civic channels.

Fact: The church disregarded their promise that it was a secular matter and strong armed the community by pulling a "revelation" out of thin air when it appeared that they might not get their way.

The church handled this poorly and it does come off cult like. And, yes Warren Jeff's pulled maneuvers like this all the time, so the comparison is apropos. You are deflecting the issue by trying to draw attention to Jeff's sexual perversions. Jeff's is in jail for rape, not for revelations similar to the one I am pointing out.

There is nothing wrong with the church adding an addition to the MTC. However, the way in which they handled this was completly shady and unprofessional. If you would put your glass of kool-aid down for a few seconds, and rationally review the facts you might conclude that this was handled poorly by the LDS church.

People act like this is strange. Did they really expect the church to allow them a say in this? I mean... really?
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Secular == blame the city/county for this, not the church ... it seems pretty clean that the church foresaw the secular failing them, or costing them too much money/time slowing things down that it was time to step it up a notch ..

We invite you to join the Q12 in their decision to build this 9 story building, or else you may be in need of a court of love.

And people choose obedience to these prophets seers and revelators over anything/all else. Cult like? You bet!!
