Why me, if you are so intersted in who pays for ldst's son's mission, why not volunteer?

I have concluded that the most important behaviors in the eyes of Mormonism is dressing modestly (if you are endowed), not looking at immodest people, and going to church.
Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

You knew the rules about temple attendance etc. Bite the bullet and sow harmony and don't be a spoil sport.
No he didn't.
Those rules are not explained prior to baptism.

Ha! You don't know me very well if you think I'd pay $12,000 for my son to preach a religion I don't believe in without getting what I want out of the deal.
The same goes for temple weddings. I'm not paying for a temple wedding if I'm not allowed to attend the wedding. My kids all know this.

Even bigger LOL! My wife is more adamant about this than I am! Tell you what - since you know the rules and you are so cavalier with respect to my money, why don't *you* pay for any temple weddings and missions I may encounter? Sounds fair enough, right?

Mr. Toronto knew the rules about temple attendance. He knew about the temple recommend interview and that some are not allowed to attend because of behavior, lack of belief etc. When he was active he most likely went along with it. Now...he is on the other side of the fence and he is crying foul. But the rules are the rules. Suck it up and give the kid a happy mission and in the future, suck it up and give a happy wedding. Be a mench.
I'm not crying foul. I'm stating what I will do. But if you want me to be a mensch, I could just lie and enter the temple whenever I want. Hell, I could lie to the bishop and stake president tonight and get a temple rec lickety-split.

I am not exactly the greatest member and miss meetings etc but I have supported my daughters wish to serve a mission and paid along the way. I put their wishes before my own desire to put the money in the bank. It is all apart of fatherhood. And at the end of day when I am long gone, they will remember the support that I gave them. It certainly will not give them a bad taste in their mouths.
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world.

It doesn't seem to be a matter of putting ones desire to put money in the bank over the wishes of their children, but one of refusing to contribute to something that is solely for the benefit of the LDS church. Why in the world would someone pay thousands of dollars for their children to do nothing but proselytize for a church they didn't believe in? The money spent benefits the LDS church not their own children. If adult children want to do something like this they should have the drive to do it themselves not expect mom and dad to fork over money for their beliefs.
An aside, I have worked in the last six years with a startling ( to me ) number of young adults who have gone on missions ( Baptist & Methodist) all of these missions were service missions and none of the "kids" had to pay, their respective churches covered the cost. Parents provide extra financial support and of course emotional support, emotional support is not limited, parents and missionaries can call, write, text, and email when ever they choose. And no one tells the "kids" serving that they should always be upbeat and positive in their communication home, the idea that someone would tell someone what to talk about is repulsive. And the LDS limiting of phone contact with family to a couple of times per year is truly horrid, there is no practice within the LDS church that stands out as a "cult" danger sign more than this denial of family communication, though the "temple marriage" restrictions are a close second.

Exactly.
I have told my eldest son (my only child who is still affiliated with the church) that I'd prefer to pay for him to go away for school or even fund a portion of a trip to another part of the world for an extended period of time. It is a waste of time to go somewhere like Europe and only ever experience door-knocking and scripture reading. Imagine being assigned to serve in France and never kissing a French girl or sipping table wine in the afternoon?
I agree - I'd rather my son experience the world through travel and real engagement with people, not through an insulated, restricted Mormon tour-of-duty.

I'm guessing you would be financially supportive of him going on some kind of humanitarian project for a period of time, if he had shown interest?

Trying to purchase a little bit of immortality there, eh?
