Ouch! Gregory Prince: "Mitt NOT the face of Mormonism."

Last night Lawrence O'Donnell of "The Last Word" on MSNBC had on LDS historian/author Gregory Prince to discuss Mitt's now-infamous "47%" diatribe. Prince had written about this in an article entitled "Mitt Romney is Not the Face of Mormonism" posted on the Huffington Post website. Here is the link to that article:

I tend to agree with Prince. With each stumble, Mitt is hurting the Mormon brand, since so many see Mitt as the typical Mormon (which he is not, in my opinion). Mitt would do well to reread King Benjamin's speech in the Book of Mormon, which I consider the most liberal and progressive essay in scripture.

I agree completely. The Romney family is the embodiment of the 21st century ideal Mormon family.

Sadly true. I remain befuddled when trying to figure out how we went from King Benjamin's eloquent speech about taking care of the poor to Pres. Monson's recent chant, "1,2,3 ... let's go shopping!"

That episode turned my stomach. I was so disappointed, and still feel it deeply. I may be an apostate and critic, but I don't take pleasure in finding out that things are worse than I charitably suspected. I have always wanted to believe that the church is more like the best Mormons I've known (my mother, for example) than the worst. The longer I live, the more I realize that if the church really was filled with people like my mother or people who even wanted to be like her, it would be a far different organization than what it has become. There would be no "1,2,3 ... let's go shopping!" and far fewer hungry mouths and needy people in this world.

It must be exhausting for those truly earnest Mormons to reconcile what the church actually does (judgey, critical, reactionary, petty, money-grubbing, PR spin, multi-million $ advertising campaigns, political dealings), with the kinds of they think they've learned from it (forgiveness, the other cheek, serving the needy, love, focusing on Christ, serving others without making a public show of it, etc.)

This would only be relevant to those who think Mormons are voting for Romney because he's Mormon. Also, if by "stumble" you mean "tell the truth" then you hit upon the salient fact that Romney, by telling the truth about Obama and his supporters hasn't seemed to hurt himself in the polls.

No kidding . . . I actually thought that line was just something made up by some bitter exmo trying to be clever until LDST posted a link to it on Youtube on this board. I was (and remain) shocked and sickened by it.

I think Mitt was telling the truth about how he honestly feels about nearly half of the country. It's a "stumble" because a good chunk of those 'unworthy' 47% support Mitt (or at least did), and he insulted them along with the Obama supporters in that group. The fact Mitt has been hurt by this is evidenced by the literally frantic nature of his campaign the past few days and the many "down-ballot" Republicans who are running away from him. Mitt's campaign truly is the worst-run in modern history. And if he loses the election (I'm one of those who doesn't count out Mitt, simply because the economy sucks), that will be his legacy long after we have all left this life.
