Not so fast there. Harvesting Darrick into the system might be the last thing he wants. Giving a case worker authority over him I think is a bad idea, he is competent enough to write his own story. I wish a major paper would allow me that privilege. If he gets arrested the system will snatch him soon enough.
A caseworker is there to assist and advocate for someone. Jeez. Why wait until things are so bad he is arrested?!?! Wouldn't it be better to get him into section 8 housing and medical assistance to keep that from happening???
It gets real tricky. The "system" doesn't exactly welcome new "clients." Some caseworkers are better than others. When someone's mood and personality are swinging, it can be real hard to interface with the "system" and vice versa.
But getting SSI, Medicaid and Sec. 8 would be great, but there will need to be some follow through so he can keep them.
If money orders are going to a mail box, there's no guarantee that he will be in a position or condition to go pick them up. Then they will just sit there until they are sent back (if ever) when the mail box is closed if no one pays the fee for it. In the mean time, the money order company just has the money until (if ever) there's a refund. There are time limits on getting such refunds. That may or may not be the best way to go.
Better to have someone on site, but maybe that's not possible. And even if it is, it can really wear a person down.
I think its great that people here are helping. But the issues can be really intractable and that needs to be acknowledged up front. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
