That's really offensive.

But getting SSI, Medicaid and Sec. 8 would be great, but there will need to be some follow through so he can keep them.

If money orders are going to a mail box, there's no guarantee that he will be in a position or condition to go pick them up. Then they will just sit there until they are sent back (if ever) when the mail box is closed if no one pays the fee for it. In the mean time, the money order company just has the money until (if ever) there's a refund. There are time limits on getting such refunds. That may or may not be the best way to go.

Better to have someone on site, but maybe that's not possible. And even if it is, it can really wear a person down.

I think its great that people here are helping. But the issues can be really intractable and that needs to be acknowledged up front. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

Of course nothing about this is easy. I hope I didn't come across like I thought it was.

However, sometimes having people who knows the system (in their area) help someone in need can get the help necessary.

You didn't come across that way to me. I'm a little leary of the mail box idea, depending on how it's set up. It would be great if there was a caring person close by who could keep an eye out for him.

Military Section 8 = a discharge because of mental issues

Public Assistance Section 8 = a housing program

Looney bin = a term offensive to those who have had contact with the mental health system.

Wow. What a dick.

That's as maybe but he is taking the official Church stance on this....

I can appreciate you being passionate about political dogmas, but I think that sometimes our ideology needs to take a back seat to our humanity. This is likely one of those times.

Sethpayne (or anyone who may be able to make it to the Portland area),

If you are going to be able to make it to the Portland area, would you mind PM-ing me your PayPal email (if you have one) so I can send a few bucks for the cause? Even if your sole point for the trip is just to buy Darrick a warm meal, and provide a compassionate ear/shoulder. I can’t afford much, but it would really mean a lot to me if I could give something to help.

Thank you,
Stu

No problem Stu. Still working on making contact.

Appreciate all the PMs. Once we are able to contact Derrick we'll figure out the best way to proceed.

Seth, I know Darrick is a good cause but shouldn't we spend the donations on something more worthwhile like fire fountains or condo complex's for rich people? It's what the Lord would want....

Good point. Whatever is left over from the Darrick funds should be spent on genetically engineered trout.
